Why I Switched to 0W8

Don't forget to add a little MMO, just in case it decides to thicken up a bit!
You are brave, although I use and still use Marvel Mystery oil since I guess the 70's for various things I get the distinct impression reading on other threads that many member's on this forum don't care for it use these days?

I wouldn’t get near that “oil”

--Past UOAs provide data points indicating non-severe service.
--Recent new circumstances are even less severe.
--Delivery driver subcontractor with very consistent conditions.
--Average 80k mi/yr. 225 mi/dy. 358 dys/yr.
--Mildest of climates working, living in SF Bay Area.
--Mostly flat roads.
--SFO <> OAK <> SJC.
-- Lighter loads now ~100# or less.
--Deadlines are becoming less time critical.
--Using basic hypermiling techniques.
--RPMs almost always 1500 to 2800.
--Hybrids designed to run on thinner motor oils.
--See YarisCross Hybrid/Spec'd for 0W8.
--YMMV.

Championship race teams are now qualifying on highest quality 0W8 motor oil.
They then find it unnecessary to rebuild engines prior to race day.
The bearings are unscathed.
Fly Erica Fly..
Yeah, but Erica is just running the 08 oil for 6.5 seconds at a time.

Not to show off, but when I only had a Kia in my garage I cared about “what’s the next oil I’m gonna use” BS. When I’ve got my first Porsche (yeah, it’s an entry level Macan, but still has this Porsche badge on it) I’ve realized that it’s the car that provides you with the incredible driving emotions, not oil or anything else. I only use the OEM recommended oil and intervals now on, there’s more important stuff in life

Hmm I see some members run in a packs?

Ever tore down an engine that the bearings got so hot the oil failed? Be honest? Most will generally diagnose it as an engine that was run without the proper oil in the sump. There are specific indicator's that are different from low oil to an oil flashed.

As for Marvel Mystery Oil I take it then you have used it and have experience and also it obvious I am interpreting from your comment something that must have failed using it?
For us, it’s experience without MMO

Why stop at 0W-8?:D

That's LAT though, probably the only company that has more dye in their oil than ZDDP... and they have a lot of ZDDP.

Light oils require a different mindset when it comes to formulating. You can't just toss an SP add pack into a Yubase 4 base oil with a 24 SSI VII and call it good. Shear stability, thermal stability, and volatility have to be rock solid. The margin for error is much smaller. It takes a good bit of R&D to get reliable and repeatable results from light oils. Some companies have the ability and mindset to make that happen, others don't.

If you want to know who's doing light oils successfully, go to an NHRA race, check out the Pro Stock cars, and see what company is on the cars.

Yep, because these puppies can be quite volatile:

Speaking of Noack, how does something like 0W-8 and 0W-16 shown above meet the 15% max limit? Or are they not API or ILSAC rated?

There were exceptions made initially for these grades, they didn't have to meet the limit. Not sure if that's still the case now?

The main brands of 0W-16 being sold have the API SP rating and ILSAC GF-6B rating, so I'd expect them to meet the 15% max Noack unless there is some other Noack spec for them. Not sure what 0W-8 bottles show for ratings.
