I’m conducting a survey about oil recycling and would love your input!
First off, did you know that you could bring your used oil to collection centers?
What could be done to encourage more car owners to bring their used motor oil to collection sites?

Any suggestions/critique would be fantastic. Thanks in advance!

Honestly who doesnt know about recycling centers?? Any other method is hugely irresponsible.

A great way to get people to recycle thier oil would be to put a deposit on it like you do with bottles and cans etc. Would make cars that burn oil more expensive to run too.

This wouldn't burden oil retailers at all........

1. yes i have known that for 19 years
2. throw people in jail or cut off fingers if caught disposing of oil in bad ways (if you don't like my suggestion, just follow the law and it will not apply to you)

Uh, my province already collects an eco fee for disposal (on the purchase of the oil) but that is no incentive for anyone to actually dispose of oil properly. If it was a deposit at least I could get that money back. The enviromental burden outweighs the administrative burden.

Deposits do not work for me. Heck most states do not have depoits. Not worth my time for X cents a bottle. You could tripple it and take a trash bag back to MAYBE get your gas money back....

Make it easier for a customers to get rid of the used oil; or most HAZ items.

It is more expensive for cars that burn it since that is why we car emission testing.

I was thinking like $1/qt. so it would be worthwhile.

Just like not every state does deposits, not every state does emission testing either. The guy is asking for suggestions.

Over time, millions of gallons of oil will be saved and possibly not dumped in an irresponsible manner. 1 gallon of oil can contaminate a million gallons of water.
BUt I still get a laugh at the level of ignorance about the most basic of service on your car--the OC--by the people who are professionals and should be the ones who should be educating people and not the other way around.

I wonder how much oil really does not get recycled and where it is dumped/poured.

I would guess that anyone that does not recycle now can't be made to recycle, no matter what.

Perhaps a sign at every place that sells oil could have a phone number/location on where to take used oil. Not totally I like that idea though, really.

Which is exactly why we should cut off the ring finger of anyone caught doing something so stupid. That way when they are in the grocery store and a little girl sees "that guy" then she can say look mommy there is the idiot who ran for president and he must have dumped his oil illegally, you know the one who preaches saving resources but has a monthly power bill that would buy a new Civic, that guy.

Most auto parts stores take used oil.

I pour my used oil in the new oil bottles. People that don't recycle probably throw out the bottles and don't have a container to recycle the used oil. So they just dump it down the drain. You can encourage people by telling them its illegal to dump motor oil down the drain.

Some oil changing places accept filters as well, but I don't know if they recycle them or just dispose of them. Some auto parts stores take filters, as sunfire recommends. I take my oil to Kragen (Schucks, etc.) and they take both the oil and the filters. I suppose it is worth looking into.

Like the way they do with old battery: you buy new oil, pay a deposit, and get it back when you return the used oil in a container by weight or volume.

The problem is you can probably cheat by dumping water into the oil. So unless if you have places that provide incentive that aren't worth cheating or have ways for the oil user to recycle themselves (i.e. blend into diesel), that won't happen any time soon.

You would have to measure the oil by weight and volume. If the density does not compute then they would apply a correction factor.

1) yes
2) curbside pickup with recycling

I expect anyone that changes their own oil would know they can recycle it.
