Why doesn't Mobil 1 30 weight meet ACEA A5?

Just wondering why M1 30s don't meet this important Long-Life low-friction spec although it seems to qualify for it. Is the new EP a better candidate? I ask because I see that other grades have a ACEA rating and Mobil 30s only meet A1, IIRC. A5- good spec and if M1 30s are so good they should meet it, right? Mobil is not shy about testing and specs either. Kinda strange.

The SM GF-4 rated Mobil 1 10w30 I purchased says it meets A1/A5 B1/B5 on the container. The 5W30 just says A1/B1.Just checked the Mobil site. It says 5W30 and 10W30 both meet A5 in the Extended protection line.

ACEA is making major changes to their oil sequences. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I agree and I do think in time we will eventually see 1 Mobil 1 that is GF-4 and still retains the 15,000 mile drain interval. That is the next progression in oil technology if I'm reading what they are saying correctly.

I think the Extended Performance Mobil 1 stuff is clearly the more durable oil; based solely on a comparison of the additive packages. The reduction in additive levels in the GF-4 formulation is most likely the reason why the 5w30 doesn't meet the A5/B5 specs. For example, the sample Brian tested in the new 3MP test had a TBN of only 9.6, compared to 11.8 the last time around for the GF-3 rated, Mobil 5w30.

For older Audi's, the 10w-40/EP or Delvac 1, 5w-40 would be my choices in the Mobil product line.

For 30-weight oils, the difference between A5 and A1 is that the A5 sequence has a tighter shear stability spec: A5 must remain in grade, while A1 can shear to 8.7 cSt. A5 also has a slightly tighter NOACK spec of 13% vs 15% for A1.

We know that shear stability is one of M1's strong points, so unless they've reformulated the 0w30 and 5w30 to be thinner, they should still meet A5.

The new Mobil 1, EP formulations don't meet the API energy conserving requirements of the Sequence IV test, but the slightly thicker (@ 100C) GF-4, Mobil 1, 5w30 does. Draw your own conclusions from that....
