I was just curious if anyone knew why Amsoil ASL smells kind of like rotten eggs? Some specific additive? I have stockpile of M1 EP and it doesn't really smell at all. It's just something I noticed when I was changing the oil last night. 3qts of M1 and topped it off with what was a half empty bottle of ASL.

I use ASL in the girlfriend's car and have never noticed that smell.

Some motor oils have very different smells. Valvoline for example has a unique order. M1 doesn't have much of a smell. It's the additive pack. The smell of rotten eggs is sulfur, gear oil has lots of sulfur in it too and is suuuuuper smelly!
They are probably using sulfur as an anti-wear additive. VOA/UOA would tell you for sure.

Old Pennzoil yb had a very strong oily smell. Smelled like crude oil. The newest PYB GF5 stuff doesn`t have that smell. RP doesn`t have an oily smell at all,but kind`ve "rubbery",like atf.

I just opened a bottle of ASL for a quick sniff. It doesn't smell like rotten eggs to me.
For reference, I also opened a bottle of AMO (10W-40). It smells the same as ASL, but much stronger. I'm guessing due to the additive pack. It's their higher ZDDP formula. In a weird way, it kinda smelled like watered down whiskey.

Something is odd. No way does ASL smell like sulfur. Is it strong like gear oil? Do all the bottles smell the same?
I wouldn't say its exactly like rotten egg but yeah a sulfur-ish smell is the only thing I could think of that it resembled. Yeah, all 5 bottles I have smell the same. I've never dealt with gear oil. I guess I'm just not used to oil smelling nasty. All my previous oil had been Mobil 1. I'm not worried about it. Just caught me as odd.
Don't say Amsoil stinks on this board. It will cause a uprising.

I love the smell of HDD
I actually like how Amsoil is running in my other car so I guess it doesn't stink, it just smells.
