Why does Customer Service stink at most auto stores?

I guess I should consider myself lucky. I have never had anyone at a parts store be rude to me (even at the stores in the hood). I do avoid Advance, but that's because the people at the parts counter are clueless, not because they are rude. They recently tried to tell me that my Ranger couldn't have rear ABS because it had drum brakes...right.

I have noticed that there is a difference in the level of service between small town stores and city stores though. For most of my parts I go to an Auto Zone in a fairly small town. They always seem to go the extra mile and are very polite. The city stores are good enough, but the small town one is so much better.

at what autozone and what parts are ever installed for the customer??? I spend a lot of time browsing and looking at stuff (mainly checking oil racks) at auto stores, AZ especially, and Ive never seen even a wiper blade installed for a customer. Maybe a few times they take out the battery/charge system cecker, or the OBDII scanner, but thats not an install.
Exactly wrong. You cannot control the attitude of others. You CAN control your attitude. How can any human being demand another act with "self-pride and minimal competence" when they believe their own actions are irrelevent?[/QB]
Never said I could control others. Neither am I required to give a *&#$ about the feelings of someone whose job it is to sell me what I need.

Ever hear, at any job, "leave your problems at home"?

Same thing. As customer the burden is NOT on me.
Period. Minimal competence means just that. As an employee, suck it up and get on with it, it's business. That customer is there for one reason, and one reason only: to spend money.

There are good customers and bad. One learns to try to turn them all into good customers . . by separating them from their money with whatever technique works best.

That can be dressed up any way you choose.

You need to read, and digest, my earlier post before you go to offering criticisms.

You can PM me if you want to continue.

I must be one of the few who look up part numbers on the company's website, and call the store to see if the part is in stock before I go and get it. I've had very few instances of bad customer service at parts stores. Now, fast food joints, thats another story

I do seem to feel that us gringos get a bit less attention than their Spanish-speaking compadrés, so I try to avoid standing there too long.
The last two times I went to a Pep Boys, I left my stuff on the floor and walked out because of this.

When this happens I always mentiont that my friend at teh INS usually gets good service here. For some reason that usually grabs their attention.

Its bad enough that most customers have no manners, not to mention when they constantly complain about the prices.

I worked retail when I was young, and I had to deal with LOTS of low class trash

It's even worse in gasoline retailers. I'm a janitor at one, and every other day I nearly get ran over while pulling trash. I in fact have applied at AZ but have yet to call and check on my application as I've been busy. When gas started getting ridiculous I had a coworker have a doofus throw an unopened can of pop at him as he was changing the sign as he was told to do. Mind you, the idiot was driving out of the lot, and my friend is 6 foot eight, so they certainly would not have done it otherwise.

At a parts store the other day, my purchase rang up to $10.16. I handed the girl a twenty, a dime a nickle and a penny. She handed the change back to me with a confused look on her face and said, "Here, the twenty will cover it". I told her that I wanted a ten back, but she said that I was wrong, that the change light read nine dollars, and eighty four cents. I took the $9.84 and added the $0.16 to it and asked if I could have a ten. She said the cash drawer was closed and that she could not do that unless I bought something, and that she probably could not do it anyhow because their adding machine was broken. I took my change and left.
