Our government didn't mandate the use of 5w20s. They (EPA) set the CAFE standards, and the engineers, chemists, tribologist developed the 5w20s to help meet the CAFE standards. Further, without CAFE and emission standards, most people would still be driving carbureted vehicles with the sophistication of a '61 Chevy Bel Aire. And you'd have to wear a level 3 HazMat suit to walk around LA.quote:
(When has government mandate ever been truly beneficial when it concerns technology issues? Challenger flew over the objections of the engineers.)
Actually the hazards of Asbestos was well known for at least 70 years. Unfortunately, there was no EPA at the time to raise consumer awareness. But what a silly analogy.quote:
Asbestos worked perfectly fine for many years gentlemen, it was the technological solution to fireproofing and insulation of its time. The long term effects of exposure to it were not complettely understood until much later.
How true. There are the 3k OCI guys, the 10k OCI guys and the 20k OCI guys. There are the pro bypass filter guys and the anti-bypass filter guys. That is how life is. There are VERY well educated low viscosity guys and some the other way around.quote:
One of the things I've noticed about this forum so far is that there always seem to be plenty of self-proclaimed experts on both sides of almost every issue.
5w20s don't need self proclaimed experts. There are a mountain of used oil analysis, GF-4/SM tests, and research papers that support it's efficacy.quote:
Not to mention all the confidence in and praise about 5W20s on this forum of self proclaimed experts
