Why does a $62,000 2025 Ram 1500 NOT have passive keyless entry?

I got a new fob off eBay, not Hyundai. With Hyundai they need to have virgin electronics in them and then they can be programmed to the car. So no used ones will work. Last programming I got was $65 and that was a few years ago.

I just bought two cheap Chyna ones for just the cases, $20. Swapped my guts over as the old cases were falling apart.

I'm thoroughly confused. Yes, I know.... this is Stellantis.

Why doesn't a $62,000 Ram 1500 BigHorn Crew 4x4 (with the Level 2 package) have passive keyless entry.... when a $30,000 Jeep Compass and a $32,000 Chevy Equinox have it?

To get inside it, you have to rummage the key fob out of your pocket, and press the unlock button on the fob. The same way that it is with my 20 year old Silverado. I just rented a 2024 Chevy Equinox LT in fleet trim, that had passive keyless entry.

Why not on a brand new $62,000 pickup?
because that truck was $37000 in 2020? 😬

You are right, my 2016 Limited has the larger tank as well standard but then we own the top line upper level trims.
I've done the build and price tool on a new Longhorn and noticed a few things like the gas tank that aren't standard anymore.. Although I can't remember what else it was off the top of my head.

I can buy just a case for mine. Cheaper than buying a cheap China one and just using the case.

It is not just a cost cutting issue although it plays a role. When cars are made, there is additional manufacturing expense associated with having complex option choices. For example, with Honda, traditionally if you want certain features, you have to buy a certain trim. So if you want the big pano roof on a Pilot, you need to get the Elite model. If you want just a regular sunroof, you have to upgrade from an LX.
Toyota and Lexus is the same way. My dad was a little teeved off he wasn’t able to get the 360 camera and parking sensors on his Camry unless he sprung for the XLE Premium/XSE but that also had things he didn’t need(pano moonroof) or want(18/19” wheels with a small hit to MPG but more expensive tire replacements, he primarily uses the car for Uber) but the nice to haves(full LCD binnacle, 12” infotainment LCD, 360 camera and parking sensors) are on the higher trim levels. Likewise, for you to get leather and some of the luxury on a Lexus, you need to spring for the Premium/Premium Plus/Luxury/F Sport packages.

The Japanese are working off JIT and what’s popular. Ford and GM will let you custom build, I think they’re a bit more willing to bend the rules with a fleet number.

You're comparing a new car to a 30 year old car. 30 years is a long time.
You think the new car won’t have the same planned obsolescence?

I have three nearly 30yo trucks that will last decades more. Even the one with nearly 500k. No need for concern?

My BMW has a fancy key, we thought we had lost one. Bought a replacement. It was >$200 all in a decade ago. I cringe to think what it costs now. Btdt…

A lot of those modules will be failing at 10+ years.

I have maddening no auto off headlights on our 2015 Honda Pilot LX (base). So oddly it dings like old Honda and if you leave headlights on for 10 mins they shut off anyway…..

Why does it lack keyless, only available on higher trims?
Because they think they can.
The buildup of dealer inventory may argue otherwise.
I'd hate to be peddling Rams right now.

you have the fleet tradesman.. then bighorn bighorn only upgrades certain features from tradesman.. and bighorn 2 has more.

To get EVERY feature a loaded car has.. you likely need a limited or Laramie

The packaging can be bad. they actually sell bighorn level 1's that cost more than bighorn level 2.. and less features...
which brings up why even option it that way.

Are they related?
Only in that GM/RAM packages a very cheap to implement feature, into a much more profitable/expensive trim level... Cruise is pretty useful IMHO, keyless entry, I don't really care since I still need to carry the actual key, or can you just use your phone now? That would be nice. Maybe if you lose a fancy key you can just get the hacking software cheaper now, clone your existing key and always use your phone?

Anyways customers need to walk on stuff like this, or they all will keep doing it.

Hyundai made 'Track' model after 2011 that excluded the cruise control. As if every track model would be spending it's life on the track.....
