Why do some people repeat themselves so often?

I literally just spent what felt like an hour listening to someone talk about how something they were going to make for me was going to look good and I kept telling the guy I know it will look good, otherwise I wouldn't have you doing it. But he constantly kept showing me more examples and this and that. I mean why does a guy who does as good of work as this guy need to keep proving himself? I even said I know you do good work. That's the second person I've run into this year who runs on a continuous loop talking about something. Then after about 10 minutes listening to that [censored], it completely drains the energy out of me and makes me totally scatter brained.

maybe he's on ritalin/adderall

but seriously.

My father in-law is that type. Drives me crazy. Nice guy that I get along with which isn't typical for in-laws, but this part I hate.

Probably just proud of his work and desperate for more.

I'd propose an answer, but my desire to remain polite online prevents me from doing so.

I do an escalation technique, starting out very politely, but moving steadily towards rudeness if that's what it takes.

When I encounter people like that, the very first time they repeat something I say "You've already said that." If they continue to repeat themselves, I will repeat "You've already said that" a few more times.

If they continue, the gloves come off. I might say "If you insist on treating me like a four year old, I'm going to start acting like one" or "Since you don't have anything new to offer, this discussion is over. Goodbye."

... and I will take action, like leaving the room, or hanging up the phone, etc. They had their chances to offer new or unique information.

I am just not that polite. Just not going to listen to anyone ramble on and on. Except my wife of course.

He was trying to sell you something and couldn't read whether you wanted it or not. So he just blabbed.

Nobody mentioned it here but many with autism have this issue. My son has autism and it is really difficult to deal with this. They don't even realize that they have already said that so it is not intentional. The only way I do it is, just by telling him, he has already told me that and I have understood what he is saying so there is no need of repeating it.

It doesn't cost to be polite. I am sure everybody does something that annoys others but it is up to us which road to take.

In situations like that I've found there's usually something like a subtle up-sell that might be brewing versus something like a personality "tick" or something on the autism spectrum...although that's always a possibility. I would anticipate them selling you on the quality of their work and potentially dovetailing their "pride of workmanship" speech into an added extra that "might be an option for you" or similar. If you're not closing you're up-selling a sale that you haven't closed on.

Maybe he wishes he had a teaching job of some kind.

Or maybe he's used to being around people who don't listen the first time.
