Why do people use mouse pad with optical mouse?

I don't get it. Habit? Favorite mouse pad? Optical mice don't have balls and so no need for pads. Can run it on the wall or anywhere, so why the pads? I see it often.

The one I have at home works more consistently with a pad. When I try to run it on the desk, the pointer occasionally jumps around on the screen during movement. With the pad, it moves only where I tell it to.

My mouse runs over a powercoat finish (on mdf) and the finish is so smooth and consistent the optical sensor gets lost and doesn't work well. So I put a mouse pad under my mouse. My newest mouse works pretty good on the powedercoat finish but not perfect.

What kind of mouse do you have?

I have a MX510 at home and a MX1000 laser here at school.

other than easy to clean and maintain (yes, mine can be washed under running tap water), another benefit of running optical mouse over pad is that there are some pads that are designed to be optically suitable for optical mouse (optical ridges and bumps for proper light count). Mine is indeed one of them and my wifey's is the very old style(1st gen optical mouse variety) checkered board type with a stainless steel surface.

I can use my optical mouse directly on my thigh with pants on (plus it makes a nice red glow). It gets confused on a very shiny table though. I like it.

Why you ask?

The same reason why people use their turn signal when they turn out of their driveway.

Using a mouse pad and using a blinker have exactly zero in common.

Actually, using a mouse pad with an optical mouse ensures smoothness and precision, which may not matter to an accountant or a secretary. However, smoothness and precision are of utmost importance to those working with images and graphics. A mouse pad ensures smooth gliding with as little stiction as possible, in addition to providing a fine pattern that the mouse's sensor can read perfectly. I use one of those really thin, hard mouse pads.

My mouse has smoother, quieter, and more consistent operation on the pad. But the main reason I use it is to cushion my hand. For me, using a mouse on a hard surface is like driving a car with a hard plastic armrest; not comfortable!

A guy on another board has a picture of a hand on a mouse as his avatar that would be sooooo appropriate here.

But I'm not gonna post it.
