Why do people cut open

Because they have money to burn.

It's nice to see the guts of the filter on here before they get used. Who knows. I like lookin at the pictures. Shows you the quality before everything it soaked in black oil.

I know I appreciate them doing it. I think it's more interesting than that show where the guy cuts everything up. In fact that show kind of bored me.....

I guess that's why I'm on this site.......

However: it is also nice to see what 5 or 10K miles of hot oil does to the media & drain back valves if they have one. I use a cartridge filter so I see what goes in and what comes out-smile

interesting... I wonder if the returned jugs of oil full of used oil are people doing VOAs?

BAZINGA!

:P

I've only done one new one and that was the recent ST#7317 costing $2.84. Did it check out the new Champ slit design that many said were ALL closed. That was for my curiosity over a filter I'd likely not be using, but wasn't expensive to check.

Other folks that do it with more expensive filters, take one for the Bitog team/oil filter board. Remember one comparing the then new Bosch Distance Plus to a P1, it was hard to tell the difference by just looking at the media. Generous folks.

By somewhat thrifty ie., tight, I prefer to wait until after I've used them to post.

Well you can learn more with a used filter how it held up and if there are metal bits in it, etc.
But sometimes its nice to have a clean one to look at as a preliminary evaluation. No dirty oil on the workbench. I was lucky when I ran all those filtrations that BITOGers sent me quite a few free filters to look at. And of course those needed to be new.

Its always best to have a baseline when comparing checking for contamination in a used filter. A good example is the guy that cut open a filter and there were some red fibers in there. It was assumed that was from the filter media from processing and not the ADBV but until a virgin filter is cut open, you won't know for sure (visual inspection only).

It does get quite expensive if you are changing filters back and forth since you would have to have a baseline for each brand but if you stick with 1, you should be good.

Sometimes you find interesting things like two leaf springs in one filter. Other times you get to see the filter new and then can compare to a used one off the vehicle. Pretty easy to store a new unused filter that has been cut open.

I prefer used, but have twice wanted to see one of every brand in a given size. You have to buy them to get that. Also helps when you want to cut the pap per, check thickness or area.

If every car mfg was required to make their vehicles with cartridge filters, no one would need to cut filters open. However, I would still like to see a clear housing to see them at work!

And your next request would be clear oil?
