Why do older folks hate on Pennzoil?

Quaker State conventional had a bad rep back in the early 60s. I had a 63 Valient that I bought in 64 with 13,000 miles. I changed the oil every 2000 miles and it still sludged up under the valve cover by 50,000 miles
Today QS and Pennzoil Conventional are no doubt great oils. At least from what some of you guys say.

I think it is the common matter of generalizing from one or a few cases. There once was a problem. The engine was using Pennzoil. i.e. Pennzoil is no good. Case closed. Of course nobody here at BITOG would forever condemn anything forever for a problem that may not have even been it s fault.

I was running QS 20 years ago when I discovered my car had a bad sludge problem. You don't think I am ready to run QS again yet do you?

Maybe the yellow bottles reminds them of the car wax they apply on their cars.

I've put in Pennzoil into my parents cars and they never complain about wax.

Her mom took her new G6 in to get an intake leak fixed that sounded like a cricket when she would accelerate and I tried to get her to tell him that they did an oil change while she was there and they used Pennzoil. She thought it was funny but she wouldn't do it.

OK, Pennzoil isn't Fram and I would have no problem using Pennzoil conventional today. But I suspect that there *might* be a grain of truth in the old myths based way back in the 60s and 70s. There was a time when Pennzoil was one of the most common and generic oils available and I have no idea whether it really was as good as others or was gunk in a bottle. I know that it *DEFINITELY* had a bad reputation among my contemporaries (I'm 45) when we were teenagers and in our 20s tinkering with cars. I don't know if that reputation was deserved, but it was definitely there for whatever reason. But then, today isn't the 70s and ALL oils are so different from what they were then that it just DOES NOT MATTER.

I don't hate Pennzoil but there is no way I would pay $5.39/qt Pennzoil Yellow Box at Rite Aid drug store as I saw it yesterday. Why would anyone buy over-priced oil in a drug store ?

I concur. In the late '60's early '70's Pennzoil had a supposedly horrible reputation in colder climates. My dad was a mechanic at a dealership that had bulk Pennzoil in stock. They had numerous problems with waxy build ups in the valve covers in cold weather. They also had major issues with lifters on most vehicles being very noisy. Once the dealer switched to Valvoline, most of the issues went away. 5 or 6 years later the dealer went back to Pennzoil, and none of the past Pennzoil issues resurfaced.

Oil back then was not very good compared to today's oils, so I always took his Pennzoil stories with a grain of salt. But then again, he was not the only mechanic who had bad experiences with Pennzoil back in early 1970's. Most of the ones always mention noisy valve lifters on Pennzoil, even with low vehicle mileage, so maybe there was some form of issues with Pennzoil for a few years.

I however, run PP with utmost confidence!

Interesting because I was in Pennsylvania a couple weeks ago. I went to Auto Zone and struck up a conversation with a clerk. I said to him "I assume Pennzoil is your top seller, being in Pennsylvania and all." His response was "Nope, lots of people up here don't like it, Mobil 1, Valvoline and Castrol are our top sellers."

My car never ran good after an oil change with the stuff. (As a Kid we all used Castrol GTX or TEXACO or ESSO). And yeah, I dont like the yellow bottles either. I had it in my Yaris to accelerate break in - it almost accelerated BREAKAGE. Did OK in normal commuting and NORMAL driving, but couldnt take some street racing I was up to. I guess shouldnt be street racing a Yaris having grey hair and Cataract Sunshades, should I ... ;(

I am older and I don't hate on Pennzoil. I don't use the PP because they don't have an oil for any of my applications.

Go back a while in time. Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Havoline had really bad reputations as the primary ingredient for sludge. Don't know if any truth or not but the reputation was still there.

I think the TV ad really work and transcend even age-old regional alliances.. I think I bought Syntec after seeing all the banners on "PASS TIME" drag race show on cable this month. I am a BP trasher too. How did that happen? BTW, I just got cable - was an antenna TV holdout ... you know, 1/2 Scot.

Frank,

Read my post for this thread.

I have a friend that works for an Iffy Lube. Hey told me that all the Pennzoil products were junk due to the fact that they have "too much detergent"! His particular location uses MFA oil as their bulk instead of Pennzoil conventional. Yet he uses M1 which he believes doesn't "over clean" an engine.

I also had someone in Walmart tell me the same thing about Havoline.

The rummors go from one extreme to the other.

I had a less than great experience with Pennzoil in the 80's.
(I'm not old, 26) My mom had a 85 Dodge Ram truck with a slant 6, she bought it with very low miles and changed the oil every 3k with Pennzoil conventional. With slightly over 100k on the truck, it started running poorly, lifters always seemed noisy, lost power. She sold it cheap to our next door neighbor, he pulled the valve cover, the head was covered in a pretty thick layer of black sludge. A few 2k runs with Valvoline and most of the gunk was cleaned, the lifter noise was gone.
I'm not out to bash Pennzoil, I know their current product is good stuff, I'm just making the point that some of their older formulas had their issues. QS had similar issues in the past as well. I wouldnt be afraid to use their current product.

The question is, how long did it take to accumulate 3K miles? 6 months of short trips would have sludged up any oil then.
