why did the set price car dealerships

I wouldn't say it has failed. My sister recently bought a slightly used Honda CRV, and she said all of the dealers she went to had the no haggle pricing...
 
carmax survives even though one knows a better deal can be had almost anywhere else if you can find the car you want. more people must hate the used car buying process than new car but much more profit in used cars, somewhat more arbitrary price setting as well.
 
I wouldn't say its failed around here. One of the largest Ford dealerships in our area is a no-haggle dealership. Another large retailer that offers multiple product lines and is a huge volume dealer of two of them is also essentially no haggle as well.

If you know what you are doing and what you are trying to buy, you can decide if its a good deal or not. My truck turned out to be a great deal - and no haggling was required.
