Hey I was wondering why so many oils come in 4.4 L jugs.

My car is small (GM 2.2) so I only need about 4 L to change my oil.

Is 4.4 a common size that a lot of people need or are they just giving us a little more so they can charge us a little more?

I would think that is a perfect size for you...4 liters and another .4 left over for top off.

I think they come that way so that they can advertise it as being 10% bigger than normal. (I've seen that on the labels often)

I think 5 quarts is closer to 5L than 4.4L.

4.4L closely resembles an Imperial gallon, a measure still used by a lot of Canadians.

After doing some research, it looks like Patman's right. 4.4 L actually = 4.6 qts, so my original theory is out. 1 imp. gal. is actually 4.55 L, so that's questionable, too. The 10% bigger theory makes a lot of sense, though.

Are we talking about the odd ball sized Mobil-1 Jugs at K-Mart. I think that their jugs only hold 4 or 4.6 Quarts instead of Walmarts 5 quart containers. To add insult to injury K-Mart charges more for their smaller jug then Walmart does for it's bigger jug.

P.S. I belive that 38DD is only a 2 quart capacity. 4.6 quarts wuld require a set of 52 DDDD!
