Who's rebuilt a p/s rack-and-pinion?

The rack-and-pinion on my 1993 Nissan is starting to weep fluid. Much to my astonishment, they still make a rebuild kit and at only $20 (Advance Auto). The job is within my comfort zone and I enjoy rebuilding things. I have a couple of questions. Will I need specialized 'steering' tools? Is the reassembly idiot proof?
That is, is it possible to reassemble it with one side being out of sync with the other, or do the parts pretty much fall into place?

Are you looking to rebuild the rack or the pump?
Neither is too difficult depending on your experience but the rack may need sleeving if its scored.
Yes you can get it together wrong the teeth have a match mark.

Okay the link is for the pump kit not the rack.
You can get the rack seals from the dealer, no problem. The FSM with have the disassembly and repair procedure, its not difficult.

Just be clean and lay the parts out exactly as they come out. Lube all the seals with PS fluid and pay attention to which way the seal lips face and bevels on washers and spacers.
Cleanliness and attention to detail will insure a good job.
No special tool needed that you cant find a substitute for.

When you read the description of what they do to rebuild a rack, it leads me to believe there's machining involved. Probably best to replace with a rebuilt one to avoid future issues. Since the car is a 1993, probably needs new tie rod ends too.

I would suspect the rack will leak again soon after you put new seals in it being it's so old.

^Wow, amazing. Only $150 for my app, rebuilt in Detroit and "free" shipping! My scheme would involve seal kit for 53 plus 2 boots for 20 each for a total of about $90 verses just throwing the eBay rack in and not to mention worrying about blotching the job up if I rebuilt it.
