Hello everyone,

I want to run SL rated 30wt oil in my small engines to break them in, but I can't find this oil available at my local store.

Does anyone still make this stuff?

Thanks,

Ben

I was able to find in Autozone, QS Defy SL, 5w30 and 10w30. It's high mileage oil but that's the only SL I know.

Also,
Castrol 0W30
Mobil 1 High Mileage
Many small engine oils marketed by Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, and perhaps others are often SJ, which may serve your needs.

Do you honestly think it will make a difference in how it breaks in?

Exactly..

If you're looking for high zinc content, M1 0W-40 has more than most SL oils... I use it in a Honda GCV160..

I don't know specifically of an SL rated single, but they're probably out there.

There's always Rotella T-1 straight grade (CF rated, no gasoline rating that I see), as well as the overpriced Kohler branded stuff (SJ rated).

But seriously... why bother? Most OPE recommends multi-grade now.

What is 30wt? There is No Such appellation.

Do you mean an SAE30 API SL?

You might have Better luck finding a SAE 30 HD C_ service category.

I was looking for SAE 30wt SL.

I've read the SAE30 is better for motor break in compared to a 10-30 or other multiple viscosity oil.

I'll have to see if I can find some SAE30 Rotella.

Shell Rotella T1 SAE30 will work good. Since you are in south Canada, I'd just buy Shell T5 syn blend 10W30.

Honestly though, the engine wont know the difference. I use cases and cases of store brand SAE30 (Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart SuperTech) on customers mowers and it works just as good as the more expensive stuff.

Mobil 1 10w30 high mileage is the closest over the counter product. You must understand that with synthetic base oils the products are meeting 10W cold flow properties even if they have no viscosity index improvers so they qualify for both straight grades and 10w30 but must claim the lowest cold flow they meet. This is why Amsoil small engine lists it accurately as an SAE 30/10w30 so you know it is non VII oil.

If you don't want synthetic then Rotella or old stock defy 10w30 is a darn good substitute although defy is now API SN if you get new stock
