hey guys.

i just bought a quakerstate oil filter from canadian tire. a few years ago i knew they were made by fram because just by initial inspection they looked exactly the same as the fram can sitting next to it only painted white.

today i was just browsing the isle of oil filters and happened to look closely to the quaker state filter and it seems very different this time compared to the fram. looks to have more holes in the center tube and some kind of valve at the end. also the case was slightly different in size and the rubber seal is in a different location.

it actually kinda reminded me of the ac/delco filters i used to use years ago. (only the ac/delco filter was much smaller than this)

i tried searching the forum to find out who makes them but the list at the top still says fram which i think is wrong. is it wix or purolator now?

anyone have any pictures of this thing cut open?

thanks

They're excellent filters. Use them with confidence. I'm using a Quaker State on one of the cars I maintain, made by Purolator. I'm using an AAP TotalGrip on another car I maintain, made by Purolator. And on my car, I'm using the Purolator PureONE, needless to say, made by Purolator. All have no issues and work perfectly.

ya i live in canada......we get boned on everything.

fram filter is about 5.50+tax
quaker state filter was 6.99+tax
napa gold filter is around 11-12+tax
K&N filter is about 15+tax

these are prices for a honda/acura oil filter...others are more or less the same.

Yes we DO.

I'm using the NAPA standard filters. All the features I require, and less than half the price of the gold (Nascar is 20 cents more expensive for me, with negligeable benefits). They were even cheaper than the Motomaster variant!

Unfortunately, CT does not stock very many of the QS filters. Even popluar sizes that fit late model Hondas aren't stocked. I really wouldn't be surprised if CT stopped carrying them altogether and just sold Frams (and the house-brand Frams).

I wonder if there is some sort of deal with Shell who owns Quaker State and currently manufactures all the Motomaster oils?

Filters in Canada appear to be heavily weighted in who manufactures them there. Fram appears to be the in house producer. You're paying big premiums for imported filters. Wix tried to get in on the quick lube end, but (at least apparently) couldn't get enough market share to keep the manufacturing and/or assembly operation running.

Pure One Purolator oil filters are 99.9% efficient - WOW
trapping even the smallest particles of dirt and grime.

I use this oil filter ===================================================== Pure One Purolator #PL30001
$6.26 w/tax at Advance Auto Parts

Pure One - part number PL30001 for both my 1997 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L and 2006 Caravan 3.8L

PL30001

The Pure One Purolator filter has the highest filter surface area out
of all the filters - look at spreadsheet C3 - score of 85 - WOW

The potential issue is that this filter element is compressed into even more pleats (64) more than any other oil filter.
This may restrict flow more than it helps relieve it, but it is hard to say for sure
as the siping in the pleats are supposed to keep the pleat gaps open.

NOTE: I use the biggest oversize oil filter I could find for both car & jeep its easy to do
just compare sizes in the store, but make sure there is lots of room where the filter goes first.
I use Pure One Purolator #PL30001 for both 3.8L and 4.0L its a huge king size filter

It also features a spring-loaded metal bypass valve and a silicone rubber diaphragm-type anti-drainback valve,
which doubles as the seal between the backplate and the cartridge.
The bypass valve is located at the back of the cartridge, not at the front.
The gasket is PTFE-treated for easier installation and a better seal.

Retail Price is $5.88 $6.26 w/tax at Advance Auto Parts
Cartridge Length 4.13 inches
Cartridge Outside Diameter 3.25 inches
Cartridge Inside Diameter 1.63 inches
Cartridge Pleats 64
Cartridge End Cap Type Stamped-steel, with bypass valve in front
Anti-Drainback Valve Type Silicone rubber diaphragm
Bypass Valve Type Spring-loaded steel
Element Type Synthetic media, stamped metal seam
Element Length 100.0 inches
Element Width 4.00 inches
Element Surface Area 400 square inches
Shell Thickness 0.011 inches
Backplate Thickness 0.12 inches
Gasket Type Nitrile rubber, PTFE-treated

I used to run these. I have recently switched to the Donaldson SYNTEQ filters.

Yes we DO.

On top of the price, we don't have a very good selection in brands...
