I carry a Quark MiNi AA on a neck lanyard. Great light.

I've known David Chow (4sevens) for years, and have tested many lights for him. Unfortunately, I retired from testing before his Quark series lights came out, so I've not done any testing on them other than measuring the output.
 
I have two independend channel chargers... I didnt know that LSD D cells were out, thanks!

What China/Taiwanese lights are the best?

What would be your top-choice light, bar none? How about sub, $50?
 
I am a big fan of Fenix, Nitecore, and the 4sevens branded lights like the Quark.

What do you want to do with the light? Some lights have a more diffused beam that is better for up close work, and others have a very tight beam that will really reach out there. Do you want AAA, AA, CR123a or what?

For something small to carry every day, yet has multiple output levels to handle most tasks, I like the Quark MiNi AA light. It's $39, and uses the newest most efficient Cree XP-G R5 LED.

The Fenix T20 will throw a tighter beam, and it has 2 output levels for more practicality. Those can be had for about $53 right now, but they don't use the newest most efficient LED's.

There are several new Quark lights, including some with larger diameter heads for longer throw, but they're over the $50 limit by quite a lot.

But if there's a chance the lights are going to get banged up, you might as well spend less and just get one of the new Maglite LED's that has multiple output levels, They're under $30 at Walmart, and are no great loss if you damage or lose them. They're quite large, though, especially compared to the Quark MiNi.

Yes, the charger can make a big difference.


There are some pretty adequate chargers that can be had at reasonable prices. I got myself a T-6280 for around $30. The T-3150 is also decent, and inexpensive. Just search for those model numbers on Ebay.

Costco has a nice pack of Duracell Pre-Charged AA(8) and AAA(2) for $18.49

I gave each of my sisters a Quark MiNi AA, some Duracell Pre-Charged AA cells and a T-3150 charger for Christmas. It's something they'll be likely to always have with them because it's so small and versatile.
 
The neat thing about the LEDs is once you shell out for them you can buy 'old' batteries or 99 cent store stock and still be satisfied. My 2 AA led light rolled under the seat in my car ON, I forgot about it. The next night i saw it still shining. I still have not bothered to change out. These happen to be duracells, but still, its the LED being the hero in my case.

X2. I like mine because I can turn the end and light up a huge area. Once I find my cat I can turn it into a spotlight and follow him around.
 
Maglites are old tech. The new smaller lites have emitters that last 50000 hrs. The run times are much longer than a mag. The beam is much nicer and on mine I have a choice of 4 different lite levels. On the lowest it will run for 30days straight. Also in tubo mode its 5 times brighter than my 4 d cell mag.You'll be amazed how bright they are.They can also tail stand. The bodies are about the same aircraft aluminum with black anodized finish. They cost more but I think they are worth it.
If you use a dropin you still won't have the vesatility of the new lights.Mine is 206 lumens in tubo mode and thats a aa cell light.You can get the same proformance from a single a cell light also but the runtime will be less.
I have 5 maglights 1 4 cell 2 of the 3 cell newer leds with the rebel emiters and a 2 cell and the new 2 cell aa led, the quark aa that I have is by far the best.

Thanks for the battery tests. With a 3 year old at home we go through a ton of AA batteries spread out between about 12 different battery powered toys. We've been using the Kirkland (Costco) Alkalines and buy them in the 48pack.

Good to know they're better than the household name brand Duracell. I always thought they were pretty good value.
 
I noticed new alkaline batteries have about 1.6 volts but new lithium batteries have about 1.8 volts. Why is that? Is it just the nature of the lithium battery?

My concern is that in an mp3 player that takes one AAA battery, would the lithium damage it because of the higher initial voltage?

Lithium AA's and AAA's can be as high as 1.9v when new. Your MP3 player probably boosts the voltage up to around 3v anyway, so it should be completely fine.
 
my sure fire eats every battery regardless of brand. I usually use duracell ones. My mag lights have rayovac batteries since they provide the best brightness imo. My LED maglite mini has rayovacs too.
