Who has their winter tires on already?

Changed to winter wheels on the Mini two weeks ago (16" Michelin
Alpin 5) and on the GTI four weeks before (17" CrossClimate+) both
on OE alloy wheels. No complaints. Marginally smoother ride comfort
compared one inch taller summer wheels (PSS), though much better
grip on wet surfaces at a few degrees above freezing. Not that much
of a surprise.

Mounted winter Continental's on wife's Volvo and some Sava Eskimo on Fiat. Run the Coopers Discover S/T Maxx on my Nissan year round, not a dedicated winter tyre but it does the job.

Snows on my Subaru this morning -we had a dusting this morning. I'll get my son's on his Hyundai shortly, a bit more of a process, no spare wheels for that yet.

Likely the tyres are lass shocked when you turn the steering wheel aswell, which also helps in low grip conditions.

How wide are the original GTI wheels? I know some Golf wheels are 17x7" and others 17x7.5" for the same 225/45R17 tyres. The 7" might be good in snow aswell

I like the deep sipes that go the whole way down the tread. On some winter tires the sipes disappear before the tire is worn out.

Yes but on others they only dissappear at the edge of the tread blocks, go deeper in the centre. My Kumho are like that, so you can't tell by looking at a new tyre.

17x7.5" ET49

For winter use I would have felt comfortable if they were just 7.0" wide.
17x7.5" is pretty much the standard GTI wheel size from Mk5 (2004) on.

I just bought some Team Dynamics pro race 17x7" to use as winter wheels, will put my conti 860 225/45R17 on them. Gives me another 6mm of cushion in case I slide into a curb.

The summers are also 17" but 8" wide

Just got a set of Nexen Winguard Sport2s installed, had a set on a previous car and was impressed with them. They're solid in warm/dry weather and feel a bit sportier than most winter tires do while also being extremely reasonably priced.

Wife got her Prius AWD-E shod with Cooper Evolution Snows back on Wednesday. 3rd season for these tires, holding up great. On steelies, no TPMS.

My Prius Prime got some brand new DTD Champiros on used Prius Alloys with appropriate sensors.

Silverado has a pair of Toyo winters on the rear axle, had them for a month or so now. One of the summer tires went flat so I said screw it and stuck 'em on early. That truck has posi-traction and will kick the axle out if I breathe on it wrong, if the tires are poor.

Not snow tires, but stepped up in beefiness compared to the factory Michelins. I was down to about 2/32nd's and needed rear brakes, so I made an appointment at my local dealer. Told the sales guy I was looking for something more aggressive and he told me his father installed Falken Wild Peak AT Trail's on his '17 Escape and loved them, so I had him order them up. My wife and I have only driven around shopping, but so far they ride very well and any extra noise is minimal over the highway tread of the stockers.

Thanksgiving weekend is always the time I pull off the wife's summer sneakers and mount the winter rubber.

But not this year.... I am in the hospital recovering from COVID and a collapsed lung. I don't recommend any of this if you have a choice. Tubes out the side of my chest is no fun at all.

Actually, her highway tread is about gone and I have four new Hancook's on the way this week, ordered from Walmart Online. Once I get out of the hospital, I will drive her car in to the local store, have them mount the tires, but bolt on the winter tires, which are just some all-terrain Coopers on 17" rims, rather than the 19" stock.

Sorry to hear about being in the hospital, were you vaccinated?

Nothing for the fronts? No stopping or steering concerns? Dad used to do that when we were in Massachusetts all the time with the Ford LTD and studded Firestone Town and Country's. After many sliding in corners and no stopping he finally went for snows on front also. Back then people thought he was crazy. I remember him actually throwing it in reverse at some intersections to keep from sliding into it.
