I buy gas from several different stations not paying much to price. My buddy here at work swears he gets an extra 50 miles a tank from gulf stations. Has there been any research on this?

That is a great question. Who does have the best gas. Especially United States Wide. I don't have 76 where I am at. But the question still arises. I have been using BP/Amoco but till recently I have looked in to this topic on the BITOG and found not a lot of people like BP and after learning symptoms of problems that are fuel related I have noticed that my truck (2000 Ford Ranger 3.0L Flex) runs better on just about anything else other than BP. The gas stations that I have located in my area are: Flash Foods (no name brand that everytime I write them an email they won't write me back), BP, Quiktrip, Shell (all over the place since they bought out Texaco), Chevron, Phillips 66, and HotSpot (which is very local to this area). Out of those I have Flash Foods, Chevron, and BP just down the street from where I live. If you had to choose what would be the better of the brands that I mentioned to go and get gas?

If anyone else has a Ranger of the same sorts or not what octane fuel do you use to get the best out it?

I don't know about the best gas, but certainly the worst comes from my dog if you feed him chicken.

I used to have a '99 Ranger 3.0 Flex Fuel, the brand didn't seem to matter but in the summer I'd have to run at least 89 in it or it would ping like crazy.

I just had to put a new DPFE sensor in the truck. When I put it in I filled up and put Valvoine Synpower fuel system cleaner in there. I seems to be running a lot better. I find that when I run 89 (mid grade) I get a lot more out of the truck and a lot less pinging. I want to run a good gas to see if that helps lessen the carbon build up that usually makes these sensors and egr valves go bad. I mean I have been using what I always thought to be good gas.

Does 89 octane fuel burn cleaner than the 87 octane? Not so much performance wise. I mean just cleaner. Does it burn cleaner inside the engine and what not inside the engine?

Gasoline quality tends to vary by region, depending on the refinery/pipeline situation and whether it is a conventional or reformulated grade of gasoline.

While someone in Georgia may report excellent mpg in a 94 Camry, running Shell 87 octane conventional gasoline, this same car may post a lesser mpg in the Chicago/Milwaukee market where the Shell branded gas is supplied thru a ConocPhillips refinery and is reformulated with ethanol as the oxygenate.

Since Gulf only exists nowdays as a marketing brand, the stations are most likely supplied with whatever ExxonMobil, Marathon, Citgo, BP, etc. gasoline that the tanker trucks are daily pulling from the bulk tanks at the distribution terminal.

The gas that your friend at work claims to give this "extra mpg" could be the same that you are running in your daily drive, it's difficult to pin down.

Timothy - The higher octane levels, 89 or 92/93 vs. 87 regular, do not have more energy or burn cleaner.

Higher octane levels means simply that the fuel burns at a slower rate.

Combustion chamber deposits are something that we all have to wrestle with. Use Fuel Power on a regular basis or Techron or Gumout Regane at least 3 times a year.

It's the lack of detergent additives in gasoline from the pumps that creates this deposit problem in fuel injectors, on intake valves & in the combustion chambers.

Most of the stations in a given area have gas from the same refinery. The only difference is the additives that each brand uses. Tha additives are different and different brands have different quantities of additives. The only organization that rates the quality of additives(that I know of) is www.toptiergas.com I am not sure if they are unbiased, but their method seems scientific. The ratings are fairly new. A few months ago the only brand listed was Chevron.

All the big brands now seem to meet their qualifications. Shell, 76, Conoco. The "cheaper" brands are not listed. Beacon, Valero, etc.

I still think the best gasoline is gasoline with Chevron additives in it. I can't get Chevron where I live but when I travel in New Mexico or Arizona I always try to find a Chevron station if I can. My cas just seem to run better on the Chevron gasoline. And Chevron maks a popular fuel system cleaner (Techron) that uses the detergent technology in their gasolines. I personally prefer the Gummout Regaine fuel system cleaner however.

I once heard a story that in testing new cars and trucks the big three automakers preferred Chevron gasoline. I don't kow if that was true or not.

Most people's answers won't make a difference to you. Gas varries widely by area and does not always come from the same place.
