who has given you the best service?

+1 or a high ticket warranty item.

I only take my car to the dealer if it is need of repair under warranty. Unless you're getting a 'free' oil change, what are you doing there? I'm 40 and can count my trips to the dealer on one hand.

My visits are for warranty only. But thats been 15 times now.

I've got to admit that our local Jaguar dealer provided service far away and above the norm. They are truly excellent.

My father bought an X-Type, slightly used, for a reasonable cost. He then had a number of issues (such a surprise) . Jaguar would send a flat bed all the way up to his town, pick up the car and repair it AND perform service bulletins as they became available. Often for free. The service they provided was "on the level", in other words, they never did unnecessary work. The prices were also correct, and roughly what you'd expect from Ford or Chevy, for brakes, oil changes and other such things. (by the way, they always used Mobil 1, no substitutions)

Even their body shop is superb.

My father was quite ill towards the end and made it a point to say that his Jaguar dealer treated him far better than his doctors!

I inherited the X-Type at about 60,000 miles and it's been a great car. Jaguar did a wonderful job of working out all the bugs. I'm about to turn 150,000 miles! Thanks, to a "pro-active" dealership that truly did improve the car's many issues.

Strangely, after owning this baby Jag, I'd own another and I'd trust that dealership.

My BMW dealer and my Mazda dealer are both excellent. Conversely, the local VW dealers apparently have a policy of not hiring techs with opposable thumbs.

Heck, even the local Toyota dealer gives free breakfast/lunch when you bring the car for service! When I had doubts about battery's condition (battery was purchased there), the handed me the coupon for free breakfast even though the entire visit was free! This is on a 16 year old Camry.

Dealership for initial purchase and warranty work only, otherwise find a good local mechanic that has a good rep. Develop a relationship with them and your life will be a lot happier.

I must say the experience I had with Ford has been excellent since the day I first walked onto the lot, to my last visit to get a pair of defective front rotors swapped out.

I also have a good memory of Saturn back in the early-mid 90's when my then GF (now wife) bought her very first car.

In general, I've had excellent service from both Cadillac and Acura dealers -- even in the military town in which we live now (which is often known for poor customer service in general). I've had poor service from the Dodge and Chrysler dealers, and with the Honda dealer here. In my limited exposure to it, the more expensive brands do offer better service experiences.

Good buying experience: local Lexus dealer and the Buick/GMC dealer.

Good service experience: I've never bought a Lexus, so it's the Buick/GMC dealer.

Generally, however, I go to my regular independent shop, as I have since 2002.

Lousy buying experience: What was then an Oldsmobile dealership in 1991. Their idea of service after the sale was a bottle of touch-up paint. Luckily, the Olds Cutlass I purchased from them was a good solid vehicle.

I chronicled getting the passenger side engine mount on my Focus replaced here.

Ford dealer in a rich part of the area ignored me. Dealer out in the middle of nowhere had the car fixed and I was out the door in less time than it took the first one to jerk me around.

I have never really had a bad dealership experience in terms of warranty and service work for Subaru, Honda, and Acura.

That being said I use indy garage one man show who gives incredible service and repair costs.

Owned 2 new Chryslers and 4 new GMs, and have only needed to go back to the dealer for the current one and that is only because it came with no charge maintenance for 4/50. So far so good, but I miss changing my own oil.

The free tire rotations are nice, that was always a pain.

My first visit was a wonderful experience. I hope it continues.

In my area the major GM retailer is the WORST place imaginable, they can't do anything right in one try...

Though I've used them less, some of my less impressive experiences have been Honda dealers. They are more interested in doing a "courtesy inspection" so they can sell you a bunch of stuff you don't need than fixing the car. Well except Mel or (was it Max) who was more interested in his chicken biscuit than anything.

Kuni Honda = Pretty bad.
Schomp Honda = Better
Nalley Honda = Fair to middling.

35 years of buying cars, but still never have bought a new one.....so no dealership experience except for one 5 minute recall.

I can honestly say, except for tires, I have never spent a penny in any shop that I didn't either work at, or own. It has been 15 years since I have been in the automotive field, and except for a couple of AC compressors, evap core and a few fuel pumps, power steering pump, alternators, and some similar little stuff, vehicles have been trouble free for us. Helps having a big toolbox and a place to work. I still hate working on cars.

EDIT: Alignments

Today's service means nothing though, all it takes is the changeover of a service manager or the dealership to be sold for the service dept to go bad overnight. Like the stockbrokers say, past experience is no guarantee of future service level.
