Who has an OLDER Honda or Toyota?

I've had the following:

- 1982 Corolla written off @ 330k km's
- 1984 Accord failed emissions @ 348k km's
- 1988 Accord traded for bike @ 275k km's
- 1993 Accord currently driving @ 369k km's (229k miles). I think the head gasket on the Corolla was replace by previous owner but everything else has been routine maintenance.

There is lots of local stock of 1990-1997 (Gen 4 and 5) Accords that I could drive around cheaply for the next 10yrs if needed.

That's a good story.

One of the first things I did when I bought my 1984 Accord in 1998 is wash out the wheel wells. I hoped to remove any potential hiding spots for salt/dirt etc that would precipitate rust. Instead - using only the force of the garden hose - I blew the rear seatbelt anchor right off!

So much for my preventative maintenance...

95 Corolla. 1st car of the family when we got here and now has 196k miles on it. Engine and tranny is original, some gasket leak at the bottom that need to remove the control arm and cross member to replace (in addition to the exhaust Y pipe), gave up on the gasket. The struts were replaced, Exhaust manifold crack (due to the sharp Y to fit the CA emission pre cat) otherwise original.

Mom got some serious fender bender in it and we went junk yard on a new door and hammer out some panels. A couple camber kit later it is all good.

Other than the mismatch color door and slightly rough ride due to worn bushing, it'll probably go another 100k miles.

89 Toyota Camry (V6 automatic) 203k miles.
  • Radiator hairline crack @ 195k - New rad installed
  • CV joints @ 195k - new CV shafts both sides
  • Headlight adjustment mechanism broke some 12yrs ago - fixed with cork
  • Failed emissions at around 180k...needed a new O2 sensor, passed on retest.
  • A/C died around 185k miles (hasn't been fixed).

There is at least 1 major thing I'm missing, but the car has been in the family for so long that I simply can't remember. I do remember it being a hassle with the Toyota dealer...my grandmother owned the car at the time.
Car currently runs great and is used as a daily driver by my father.

89 Honda Accord SE-I (2.0 FI manual) 163k miles
  • Water pump @ 65k
  • Timing belt @ 75k (this one took the valves with it, so it needed head work)
  • Intake Manifold Gaskets @ 162k
  • Head Gasket @ 163k
These two might be related to the shoddy work of the mechanic for the timing belt mishap. I know for the fact the intake manifold bolts were not tightened correctly, which is why they worked loose causing the vacuum leak.
  • Upper and lower ball-joints started squeaking around 120k. We have yet to replace them.
  • Speedo cable started squeaking around 120k as well...most annoying noise in the world.
  • Stereo has been through multiple amplifiers...they never last long (bose system from factory). Powered antenna broke ages ago...powered antenna's are terrible ideas to begin with.
  • A/C hasn't worked in ages...so disused now it probably couldn't be fixed.
  • Cooling system is dirty as can be...but mainly because it was neglected for most of the vehicles life (1 change on record, WP rapair above). I'm currently cleaning it out with slow flushes.

Not the smoothest driving thing in the world, but its pretty comfy (squeaks everywhere though). Its driven when we need to take a quick trip somewhere...we simply don't trust the car to take it more then 5 miles away from home. But overall it runs fine and just passed emissions.

Car in sig with mileage indicated. Bought used May 6/10 w/ 96k km on it. Since replaced serpentine belt and tensioner, PCV valve, air filter, one strut and mount, and had a corroded brake line rupture, requiring replacement and a master cylinder brake fluid bleed.

Has an ongoing oil consumption issue, present since I bought it but no deterioration even if I haven't licked it yet. Bought it for 1k under book value and have about broken even on my initial cost savings. No other issues or signs of anything looming. Car has been a trooper from day 1 but required some TLC to nurse it back from the "too little use syndrome" to where its running today. No complaints, no regrets.

When replacement time comes will likely go with a 9th gen Corolla (this is an 8th gen, same as the '01 is, and virtually identical to it).

My father-in-law has a 1995.5 Tacoma LX, with 4WD and the 3.4L V-6 engine. It's never stopped, never quit, never hiccuped. It has about 230k miles on it now I think. It's been a real nice vehicle for him.

Bought a new 1994 Civic Dx and put 255,000 on it in 5 years. Always ran Castrol GTX 5w30 & 10w30 in it, and OEM filters. Fuel pump quit at 190,000 but that was the only problem other than routine upkeep. Great car it was, and ran awesome when I sold it, even at 255k.

I now own a Nissan Sentra, which is a very good car once the head gasket issue was fixed.

I have a 92 Honda Accord LX (CB7) and she just hit 336000km's. This car has been amazingly reliable for the age and wear and tear it gets. You still see so many of these old Accords still driving around, Honda really over engineered them to last a long time. I am going to be truly upset when the day finally comes for her to go to the scrap yard, because i know the newer Hondas are not as well built as the old ones were!

I should expand a bit...it's got 222K on it with the original engine/trans. I have replaced a Water Pump (twice), starter (twice), radiator, the driver's window mechanism, some cooling and brake lines and installed a lift kit. It needs new front brakes every 50K, has had some AC work done and is on its 3rd battery and 5th set of tires.

The most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.
