while changing oil, big metal piece blocked drain

If it's magnetic you can stick a magetic plug in it to help hold it on the bottom. I really doubt that it's gonna move much though.

Once I was working on my 345 International. I pulled the lifters up in their bores to pull the cam out. I heard a bang, splash and a clunk.

One of the lifters fell down and fell into the pan. I'm lazy. I bought a new lifter instead or pulling the oil pan off. That engine is still running and now in it's 3rd Scout body.
 
I would dig it out, put it in the oil sample and send it away for a used oil analysis. I wonder what the wear metals would come back as?
