Really quick guys, need to do an oil change in the Grand Am pretty soon. Saw an add at O'Reilly's for $6.99 a gallon for Castrol GTX, all weights. I know it's a good oil, but, providing WallyWorld hasn't jacked up their prices, a 5 qt jug of Havoline was (hopefully still is) $6.44. All things considered, would y'all get the Havoline or the GTX for roughly 50 cents more? Or should I just take advantage of the sale on GTX and grab a couple of gallons anyway? Plan on running about 4-5K OCI's on either one. My OLM light comes on around 7K, but not sure I wanna take a dino that long. I'm running The Green in it right now, but, I want to switch back to dino...sort of like an experiment, if you will.

Thanks.

Havoline at Wally World is now in the $7.44 neighborhood... I think!

Either oil is very good. I change my dinos between 3-4K. However lately, I've been dismounting the old filter, draining it - then reinstalling it for 7-8K-total service.

Havoline is 8.88 for a 5 quart jug, while GTX is 9.97 for a 5 quart jug at Wally World. Can't go wrong with either, but my vote goes to Havoline since it's cheaper. Both oils should be able to give you 4-5k pretty easily imo.

I was just at Advanced Auto the other day and saw they had the Hav jugs for about 7 something. Aint been to Wally World in awhile though..but if I'd known I would have probably bought some. Guess I'll snag up some GTX before it goes back up. I have no problems at all running GTX, I've just been itchin to run some Havoline in my 3400 V6 that's in the Grand AM. That engine absolutely HATED M1 lol...

Havoline is $8.12 for 5 qt. jug and $1.48 for individual quarts at the WalMarts around here.

BTW... AA's big jugs are the 4 qt. size.

My PepBoys ad that came yesterday has a coupon for Castrol GTX 99 cents a quart after mail in rebate up to 12 quarts.

$9.97 and $2.18 for Castrol GTX here. Havoline is $8 something. The lowest priced "major" brand at my Wally World is Quakerstate at $8.12 per gallon or 5 quarts...

What did I missed? Several years before many would complain about the sludge potential of the GTX, some would write never Castrol again for me... and there was an other camp for GTX's wetting, clinging ability for decades (I think Magnatec is the fruit of utilisation of this perception or fact for the market). Has the perceptions changed after the GC? or GTX solved the problem? or else SL and SM are too good to discuss these anymore?

Since (at least here), their new bottles state something to the effect of "better detergency" may be indeed GTX changed its formulation, and indeed there was such a global public perception of prone to form sludge.

With all the confusion for me I'd probably go with the Havoline, if I have to decide quick.

Even my 49 cent Kragen Chevron cost that $2 or 2X
$2 since the stock it so poorly.

Yeah, but I'm so anal about saving a buck that I would drive twice as far to another store to save a buck or two. Bad enough I have to pay out the a** for gas, might as well try to save where I can...lol. There's a WW near me anyway, so I'll just go there and close my eyes and pick something.

I remember "back in the day" when i was first driving, I was quite sternly warned to "stay away from Castrol GTX at all cost" (synths did not exist then, except for unknown Amsoil). The reason given then (I always questioned it's validity) was, an extraordinarily high ash content. This was many hundreds of formulations ago, though.

...oh well. I guess that's what I get for not keepin up with stuff. Aint even stepped foot in a WW in forever. Guess I'll stock up on the GTX and then run some Havoline later on down the line (whatever the price may be at the time). Last time I was in there though I know it said $6.44 for the 5 qt jug...why oh why didn't I stock up then

Bighead,

I ran Mobil1 in my 3.4L Grand Am GT from 15K to 100K. Yes, the engine was noisey, but looking through the fill hole, the components inside are SPOTLESS!!!

Eventhough my engine seemed to be in good shape, I decided to do one application of AutoRX since I hit 100K miles. I'm currently on the rinse phase with Havoline 5w30. My engine now runs quieter with the Havoline. I don't see you have any problems if you'd throw that in your GA.

Although, as soon as I'm done with my rinse phase I'm moving over to Green GC.

I was a Valvoline man when I knew little 'bout oil and 1st started driving 'bout 16 years ago (I'm young!). They had the commercials that always ran during car repair shows and races so I figured they had to be the best. Plus, my dad was die-hard QuakerState so I knew it mush be crap. My dad had to add 2 quarts of QS to his 84 Chevette every time he went to work. I didn't want it in my '82 Bimmer! Castrol's engine running w/ no oil commercials seemed like silly adverts to me so I stayed away. I think the current respect for the brand is trickle down from the Greenies. Hate to admit the first dino I put in my CR-V after 60k miles of M1 was 5W30 GTX.

If you are going to go short intervals, why not go Supertech? $6.38 for regular and $6.68 for HM in the 5 qt. bottle.

I too went from M1 to GC (same engine) and it was smoother and quieter. However I need all the MPG I can get in that thing (if not for that I'd keep running GC). Plus, for the driving I do, I don't need a full syn. It's just a grocery getter...typical daily driver. But, good move to the GC, your engine will love The Green

I have thought alot about that, and am anxious to try it. I've just been on the Havoline kick for awhile, and I want to try it (never run Hav before). But, when I finally go to WW I'll look at the ST as well.

Hah, do they even have Wally World in Round Rock anymore or do you have to drive to Georgetown? I'd have thought Round Rock would have deemed Wal-Mart to unsightly. That's something you see in Pflugerville.

I don't know how good this stuff is but hey, it's SM. I'm stocking up in case oil gets any higher.
