Lately I have been reading about this Redline product and people have been saying a lot of good things. My manual for the wife's 04 Camry 4 banger calls for a 5w30 , but people have had good results with 5W-40 too. Which one?

those new style camry cars with the 4cyl and the manual trans are nice cars. Even with the AT, theyre nice to drive cars and get decent mileage.

I wouldnt discount M1 5 or 10w-30 iun a toyota engine. M1 does EXCELLENTLY in my father's 94 previa 2.4L 4 cyl. I believe M1 is well matched to the metals used by toyota.

I am not sure that engines quiet by going heavier. Cases in point: There has been no difference in noise (maybe its actually quieter now!) going from 15w-50 M1 to 5w-40 rotella in my BMW.

Similarly, I hear no difference in noise between castrol startup 5w30 (which is a lighter 30 wt), compared to GC 0w-30 (nearly a 40 wt oil) in my chevy truck.

A camry should be pretty quiet as is. At least the rental solara 4 cyl I had was very quiet.

redline is a great oil, dont get me wrong, but for toyotas, based upon what Ive seen, M1 is the cost effective and excellent choice.

Like you could even hear that engine while sitting in the car!

Use whatever weight you want. But, I don't see the need to move up to a 40wt until you have over 100k miles on it.

Must be nice being able to tell how loud or quiet an engine is.

Mine's just loud. Especially that loud "rod knock" like noise.

It's NOT a rod knock! I refuse to accept it.

Depends on what driving you do. If you frequently go >85mph, or drive in mountainous area, or tow, the 5w40 is a better choice.

Ken4, even with high-speed driving, towing, etc ... I doubt brianpavolvic would be able to over-tax Mobil 1 5w30, Red Line 5w30 ... or even Schaeffer S7K 5w30 synthetic blend.

Of course, this assumes modest drain intervals ... not to exceed 7,500 miles.

Besides, Allentown is a pretty moderate climate.

I am not a big fan of most 5W30 oils! In this case you truly can not go wrong though! Redline always works great in Toyota's! The Redline 5W30 has turned in more Trophy UOA's in Toyota's then any other oil! Most of my concerns about weak HTHS numbers with most 5W30's do not seem to be an issue with ester based oils!

Now I have run Redline 5W40 in my 2003 2.4 Camry and it worked just fine. I ran it down to -18°F with no issues at all. I like 5W40's better then most 5W30's for the best all around comprimise. The only down side to running Redline 5W40 over their 5W30 is that Redline's 5W40 has about the same amount of viscosity improvers you would expect to find in most companys 5W30's! Redlines 5W30 does not use any viscosity improvers!

So either way I think you will be more then satified.M1 seems to do really well in Toyota's as well and is significantly cheaper.

This engine the 2AZ-FE is not hard on oil from a wear metal stand point! It is hard on oil though due to oxidation. If my one toture test this winter is any indication this engine is prone to generateing a lot of insolubles! The engine in the echo is of simalar design and it too is prone to high insolubles!

2AZ-FE So now my Camry has Issues. They print to use 5w30 on the filler cap on my 2003 camry.I for one have been using the 75/25 mix of M-1 10/30 RL 10/30. Until I see different it works.I have 2 gals. of Amsoil 5w30 and may try it to see how it compares.I bet their both about the same in my 1 year interval with a filter change at 6 months.I think renewing the Air filter every year is a good Idea so many people expect so much from their MC 5w30 to last a year. I think all the stop & go driving short trips etc. just takes its toll.I like Schaffer and perhaps I would take it to 7500 miles or a year but not your average store shelf oil.The Camry is like the Honda if anything can give you a good UOA its Toyota.
