Just bought a 06 Civic. The previous owner has been changing the oil every 2500 miles with regular dino oil, don't know the brand or weight. It has 115K miles on it.

What synthetic would you guys recommend? I buy a lot of Amsoil straight from the manufacturer, so I'd like to stick with them if I can.

Thanks guys!

If you can get Amsoil on the cheap, the Signature 0w20 would be fine for you.

In terms of store-bought oil, Mobil 1 AFE 0w20 is pretty easy to get. Quite honestly, the Honda Synthetic 0w20 is great value for the money. Every dealer stocks it for like $5/qt.

Amsoil Cheap!!! Let me in on the deal;) the sig series 0w20 is a great choice, I would probably run the XL 5w20 with shorter OCI's (I just am not a long interval guy) but I really don't think you can go wrong with ANY of Amsoils' offerings. That is a great engine you have on your hands, well maintained too (at least oil wise, don't forget the trans and other fluids).

I was also considering running XL in my '11 Civic (same engine) I think that is a great oil choice. Although honestly these engines are about as easy on oil as they get. Roll the dice.

+1

And Toyota Synthetic 0w20 is very good too.

I 3rd... or 4th X the XL as well. It would be perfect for the Maintenance Minder system in the Civic, which will trip from 6-8k depending on your driving so the XL will still have extra life left in it for safety.

I say that's a pretty good bang for the buck but feel that the OE would perform pretty good as well.

It takes 5w-20. Check if the engine block has any cracks. During that year, they had issues with the engine block cracking and Honda has a warranty extension out.

please dont waste money using synthetic on this car

the cheapest sm/sn oil will suffice...

So the oil doesn't stop at the warehouse? Cool!!

You have at least 4 easy choices from Amsoil. It all depends on your OCI and all that goes with choice. XL would be my first generic choice....

What OCI are you looking at? Driving style, conditions, etc. Get a 5K-10K mile or so UOA as a starting point if you want to go extended.

Added thought: Motorcraft is very close to the blend Honda stealers sell it is made by Conoco the same oil co. that makes Motorcraft. There are voa on both Save yourself $$$ unles it is sleeping at night thing!!

If you want to stick with Amsoil I'd also recommend the XL 5W-20 over the ASM 0W-20 for a number of reasons.
Firstly, Amsoil doesn't make a typically light 20wt but the XL 5W-20 (HTHS vis' 2.7cP) is lighter than the ASM 0W-20 (HTHS vis' 2.8cP). It also has a slightly higher VI of 168 vs 166 for the ASM so it will be lighter at all start-up temp's except extreme cold.
Finally it's cheaper.

Thanks for all the inputs! I think I'll go with the Honda 0w-20 synthetic. My neighbor works at the Honda dealer so hopefully I can get it at a decent price.
