I just bought some Mobil 1 10W30 for my 118K mile '96 Yukon (5.7L Vortec) that I will use on my next change. I also bought a Fram Double Guard filter.

I have since read (here) essentially that Fram filters are not worth the box they come in.

True? Not true? If true, why, and what is recommended instead?

A guy who goes by the user name of RealWing did an outstanding study of oil filters by cutting several open. He has a post in the oil filter section. You might want to take a look at it. His post includes excellent photographs of several oil filters-K&N, FRAM (two of them), Honda (OEM and replacement), Amsoil, NAPA Gold I think, Bosch, Purolator, and probably some more that I cannot remember right now.

I have to give my 5 inlet holed Delco PF44 a big thumbs up. I'm currently on an extended drain, and at 5000 miles my oil was just starting to get black carbon particles that could be seen on a white paper towel after wipping it from my dipstick. A new filter change only took all the black out. Now it's back to light brown on a white paper towel.

My Audi get's only OEM filters: Bosch, Mann, or Mahle. The only other filter I'd use would be a Mobil 1 filter.

I like AC/Delco filters for a GM. My local Chevy dealer sells the cartridge filter for my wife's Cavalier Ecotec cheaper than a Fram at wallyworld!

Good choice mikemc. My bad attitude dealer wants the same $7.95
as Wallys. In June I found the same Purlux 264A filter in a Hastings
box for $7. My dealership has changed hands. I will see if anything
has improved in September when I do my next 3 month oil change.

I wouldn't use the Double Gaurd!!
The last thing I would want is a filter impregnated w/ teflon.

I think most of the good filters have been listed in this topic. Mobil 1,AC-delco,Wix,Mann,Mahle,K&N and Bosch. The only one I am uncomfortable with is the Bosch. This is from looking at the inside of several that have been posted on the web. The only one missing is the one I prefer which is the PureOne. I think it is the best for the money and as good or better than those listed. Just my $.02 worth.

Yup. Teflon (PTFE) was never designed to be an engine lubricant, and can actually clog oil passages from what I've read. I belive Dupont tried suing or got sued because they didn't want people using the Teflon name. Dupont itself said it was not for engine lubrication.
Ditch the double guard, and get, well, anything else

I use Napa Gold now myself, but apparantly the stock AC Delco's for your application are a great choice too.
