Which mystery oil?

Below are VOA results of two different additive packages, both European. Based on these results alone, which would you pick and why?

Mystery Oil 1:

Boron: 71
Silicon: 3
Calcium: 2586
Magnesium: 5
Phosphorus: 899
Zinc: 984

Viscosity @ 100: 13.97
TBN: 9.6

Mystery Oil 2:

Boron: 74
Silicon: 6
Calcium: 2462
Magnesium: 14
Phosphorus: 822
Zinc: 1139

Viscosity @ 100: 14.54
TBN: 10.4

If anybody recognizes what they are, please do not disclose it to avoid any brand favoring, etc. I'll do that at the end.

Ad packs are nearly identical. Differences in viscosity and TBN are small enough to not matter. So based on just the above, I would not be able to pick. Need stuff like VI, HTHS, and the specific MFG specs that they meet before I could choose.
 
I despise these kind of games or contests. You should be picking oil by quality not by any specific additive. Its the combination of the additives that is important. You can be assured that the top of the line Amsoil has a high quality combination of additives despite the quantity of any one additive.

Stop wasting our time. The forum is to learn and help others, not play guessing games.

Both are Porsche A40 and VW 502.00/505.00 approved. Don't want to get too specific to avoid disclosing which oils they are.

I'm not trying to pick an oil, I've already done that. I'm just looking to see what elements in the additive package people prefer having more of.

Agreed. The VOAs are within measurement noise of each other. I would also pick on whichever brand you 'like' better, price or availability.

Sorry but I do not think any of the members are really qualified to get down to the individual additive basis. Unless they are petroleum engineers and or have a test lab where they can run a new engine, tear it down, examine the wear and move on to the next test. Most of the information on this forum is from experience not testing and is therefor subjective.

Wow... A little harsh?
I'd go with oil #1. Even though it's in the range of noise, there is no sense in having a higher level of silicon to start with that can add questions in a used oil analysis.

I see where you're coming from, and at the end of the day, I reckon how much of each element you can have in the oil is already regulated by whatever standard the oil is required to meet.

For educational purpose, I've been trying to make a list of each element's basic purpose:

Boron: anti-friction
Calcium: detergent/dispersant
Magnesium: detergent/dispersant
Molybdenum: anti-friction
Phosphorus: anti-wear
Zinc: anti-wear

...and after doing quite a bit of reading in the OA section, it seems certain elements (like calcium and zinc) in higher doses are favored. It does get rather complicated where certain elements are not exactly emissions system friendly, and too much can certainly be a bad thing.

Really, the two main elements I was looking at here were calcium and magnesium. The first oil is PAO-based Liqui-Moly Synthoil High Tech 5W-40, and the second is Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40. Both are described as having excellent cleaning and deposit prevention abilities, yet when you look at the analysis, they are pretty much on par. One has more calcium whilst the other has more magnesium, albeit in minute amounts. Does the slightly higher amount of magnesium and less amount of calcium work better at cleaning? Does the better solubility of a Group III basestock really make it that much better than Group IV?

At the end of the day, picking a good brand name at a good price works for the majority. But I guess curiosity gets to me, and I have a habit of over thinking the basics.

I'm running the Liqui-Moly in the Ford 4.6, and Pennzoil in the Mitsubishi 3.0. I use Liqui-Moly Pro-Line Engine Flush in both before each oil change, although there appears to be a bit of varnish on the cylinder heads in the 4.6 and on the camshafts on the 3.0. It's not heavy varnish and the levels are pretty much exactly the same. Just want to see if the PU will remove that on the 3.0 and then try it out on the 4.6. Price wise:

Synthoil High Tech: $8.52/liter
Pennzoil Ultra Euro: $13.49/quart

For me oil choice is simple, if my wallet is bulging with C notes, I would by Amsoil, otherwise PU. I buy PU as my wallet is on empty. I trust Amsoil to make a very high quality oil at a high but still reasonable price point.

For the other lubricants I spend the money on Amsoil (ATF & diff & transfer case).
 
Yes, I read over the 5w-40/0w-40 offering from liqui-moly's site and found the one 'closest' to your information. Albeit, their pds is slightly different. I think either would be just fine.
 
If the 2nd oil is Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40 the spec's are off. It has a 180 VI. For that reason in addition to the slightly higher HTHSV I'd favour this oil assuming it wasn't more expensive.
 
I'll have to side with Pete, they are so similar that I would purchase based on price/availability.

Indeed something is not right with this VOA.
