Looking at two different filters from wix for hydro-static tractor, I find one that is cross referenced from Donaldson, and another from crossing the oem part number. They are both the same in fitment, however, the beta ratio and micron ratings are different. Which filter would be the best? .....,,,,,,,,,...,,,,,.wix 51455 http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=61853 Part Number: 51455

Top one, 51455
Beta ratios work by dividing the minus one of itself with itself.
so a Beta 2 is
1/2=.5 or 50%
Beta 20 is
19/20=.95 or 95%

So knowing this we see that 51455 is 50% at 4 micron and 95% at 10 micron. Thats pretty good.
51456 is 50%@ 9 micron and 95%@ 23 micron. Additionally it shows 98.6%@ 30 micron.
Which is ok, but 51455 is clearly better at filtering.

I wouldn't spend a lot of time over thinking this. No way you will ever be able to see benefits of picking one over the other. Make your choice and forget it.

Thanks for the informative replies. The 51455 is listed as my replacement on the wix website, but my supplier o'riellys shows the cross ref to a 51456, so ??? to the info. I now understand the beta you explained, thank you. And no, i really wasn't over thinking this, it's just the fact that they are a $60+ filter, and they are used for 400 hours. Want to go with the best one, and then stick with it.
