Which is more important for a gear oil, weld point or 4 ball wear scar?

I saw as recent chart of several gear oils, as the title asks, which is more important?

I'd say neither in typical usage... such as an automotive differential.
Not exactly. The wear scar is a good comparison to heavy, consistent loading of the gearset like highway miles. The weld point is important for high-impact, high stress applications... think drag racing launches on slicks with a clutch dump. Both are important facets of the gear oil's protection.

@HPL Plant Manager did I approximate that correctly? I don't remember all the details of what you shared on this. Thanks!
