Alright, just got back my old 96 2.4l, 2WD Tacoma from my father-in-law. He got a new Dodge and didn't need 2 trucks. And no, I didn't have to give his daughter back to get it

.

Since new, I have put a 90915-YZZB1 filter on it. I go to the friendly stealership to get another and he gives me a 08922-02011. It looks different and I tell him so. He says that this is the only one thats called for and I tell him about the YZZB1. He says, "oh, yeah, that one fits too". I ask if I can get a YZZB1 anyway and he says its not available anymore. Hmmm. I go to another dealer and guess what? They have the YZZD1 (superceeded the B1). They say thats all they have ever used. Ok, the 08922 has "Made in USA" on it and looks kinda cheap, especially in the gasket area. The YZZD1 has "Made in Japan" and looks much better made. I buy 3 of these, almost no difference in price. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or has any feedback. I'm personally gonna stick with the YZZD1.

Mine all show the 2011, I have about +6 left,
I'll check the stores on the others.

I did notice that the best ones I dont recall the numbers, came with the SEAL already lubed. Are youres pre-lubed?

I even recall some real cheap looking ones and although mine are made in the U.S.A. They look fine to me... not like the ones the last couple years.

Toy4x4-Awesome link, thanks! Confirms my suspicions about the insides by judging the outside. Ironically the newer YZZD1 doesn't have the same gasket crimp/construction as the 20004 shown. The older YZZB1 did. Newer one is labeled Denso also but some say "Made in Japan", some say "Made in Thailand". Both look identical though, except for the mentioned gasket area. And yes, my gasket appears to have been "pre-lubed".

They both look like good filters to me but the 90915-20004 looks more interesting.

I couldn't tell but there appears to be cardboard in side the 90915-20004. I'd also like to see a flow measurement taken on these before I try them on my Toy's 3.4 V6.

No cardboard inside the -20004 filter. It seems to be fiberglass mat, 2mm-3mm thick, with some kind of resin impregnation.

Does anyone have proof that Purolator is making filters for Toyota? Several years ago Purolator and Denso were 50-50 partners in a filter plant in Tennessee, then Denso bought out Purolator's interest.

No absolute proof but I did cut open a 02011 that said "Made in USA" and it strikingly familiar to a Purolator I've seen opened up. Same construction, same looking materials etc. The YZZB1 I opened up looks exactly like the 20004 except the gasket is black. This one says "Made in Japan" and has the trademark Denso logo on it. I will cut open the newer YZZD1 when I'm finished with this interval. It looks like the previous YZZB1 except in the gasket base and says "Made in Thailand", also with the Denso logo. The mystery continues

Wondering about the Micro-Guard at O'Riley, looks exactly like the OEM to me. Exactly like the one Made in America.
Did get aholw of both
20004 & YZZB1
and to me the only difference in them is in the plug in the bottom and the size. Look EXACTLY alike. Looks Synthetic. Looks like a type of Sponge, and looks like it may hold more dirt or more oil anyway because the can seems more hollow.

Ok, mystery solved......sort of. I went back to the dealer and asked for a 90915-20004 filter like the one in Toy4x4's reply (thanks for the pics BTW!). The parts guy says the 20004 has a new #. I said, wait, lemme guess, YZZD1? He said no, its a YZZB5. He showed it to me and it is EXACTLY like the 20004 and the earlier YZZB1 from my application. Same filter media (from what I could see inside the center hole) same housing and gasket area, but the gasket is now black, and it is labeled "Made in Japan" and has the Denso logo. It is approx. 1/2 inch longer than the YZZD1 but extra capacity is probably negligable. I asked why it wasn't replaced with the 02011 or even the newer YZZD1. He said that Toyota didn't want to risk engine failure of their larger and more expensive V-8s due to a cheaper oil filter and specs the B5 specifically for this reason. I figure this says alot and bought 10 of these on the spot. Oh, and the kicker? Same price as the YZZD1, $5.25

I've cut open both the 90915-YZZB5 and the -20004. They're have identical media, but the -20004 has more media and has a bypass valve inside. On the Tundra V8, the -20004 is the filter on the engine from the factory, and the -YZZB5 is the filter shown in the parts book.

If Purolator supplied the machinery to make the PuroDenso filters in the Tennessee plant, I'd expect that they look like Purolator filters.

This for the 20004 ?
Are you sure>???
I would love to have the name and number of the dealer you talked to, mine list for 9.+ and bought for 6 or 7 and a little change, cant find the paper...

The YZZD1 (smaller "Denso") and the YZZB5 (supercedes the 20004) are the same price at my local Toyota dealer, $5.25. The 90915-02011 "Purodenso, Made in USA" is $4.99 from another local dealer. I can get a "true" 20004 from the local Lexus dealer...... for $16

Gonna cut apart a "new" YZZB5 and see if its like the 20004 from Toy4x4's pics. I'll post my findings and hopefully put this one to bed.

I can confirm this. No bypass valve in the YZZB5, and less "ribs" (less media) than the 20004. The 20004 is the one to get if you want the absolute best Toyota OEM filter.

Over list price, as is typical at a Lexus dealer. It sells for less than half that at a local Toyota dealer.

Awesome, thanks for the heads-up on this

.

I have cut apart the YZZD1, the YZZB5, and the 02011. So far the YZZD1 seems the best built with the best hardware inside. I thought the YZZB5 would be a duplicate of the 20004 but was I ever wrong. This thing has the same gasket as the 2004 and the appearently the same media. the problem is NO bypass valve and every 3rd strip of media is gone. Toyota went way cheap on these. Now I get to **** my dealer off again when I take them back

.

I'll try to get the pics up in the next day or 2.

Are there TWO layers? or is there metal that can bee seen? Because the 20004's look like thers a couple layers.
One going way down to the bottom and the second about 2/3 down with several strips going all the way or at least most of the way down.

90915-20004 has a double check valve interchanges with 90915-YZZB5

Before ordering, confirm with the store that you will actually be receiving the 90915-20004. The list price is too similar to a 90915-YZZB5 and not the official list price of the 90915-20004. I know of an online store which pictured the 90915-20004 but actually sent out a different "interchangeable" filter.

This is what I'm afraid of, since this is what my dealer told me, the YZZB5 is the "new" 20004. This filter looks very poor IMO. When I said every 3rd strip is missing, imagine looking at it from the top and the media has "spokes" around a core that reach out from the center. The 20004 has 9 such spokes and the B5 has only 6. These "spokes" go top to bottom in the filter housing. There is just an empty space where each one should be. Now there is media around the entire plastic cage that holds it together, just not those 3 spokes. I need to get the pics up, I don't eplain it too well. Suffice it to say, the B5 is a REAL cheap looking filter, no metal tube, just a plastic cage holding what little media there is, no BPV, no spring to keep the ADBV up against the gasket base etc. If I can't get some reasonably priced 20004s, I'm gonna go back and get the YZZD1s.

Here are other places carrying the 90915-20004 for a reasonable price:

1. Steve Ganz at Carson Toyota in southern California (they ship) - $7.25 each last time I purchased them. I order all my parts through them.

4. Check around your local Toyota (not Lexus) dealers.
