My friend just bought a car with 160k miles and he wants to clean the engine. Was wondering what engine oil brand is good in cleaning up engine internals. I heard valvoline is good in this department.

Mystik and Citgo are both pretty good, I'm told.
Mobil Clean 5000 (I won't use it, but...)
Most any good, conventional oil?

Just use Auto-RX and be done with it.
Farm and Fleet bulk oil?

You don't just rely on motor oil to clean up a high mileage engine.

Get some AutoRx and run it with any ordinary grade multi-vis motor oil instead.

If you can believe the advertising then it would have to be
Mobil Clean 5000. If you can't believe the advertising then what do you believe. They are all very good oils. They meet the current specs , don't they? Probably, my guess would be the Mobil then the Maxlife, only because Maxlife has things in it you may not need. After that it is a jump ball.

Oil by itself will not "clean" his engine if it has been neglected. The autorx cleaner will actually clean it. I have never used it but it gets very good reviews here.

Correct. High detergent/dispersant oils are not primarily intended to "clean" neglected engines. They can keep a new engine cleaner longer in many situations but they can't just clean things up by themselves.

Brian,

Remember when I used 10w30 HDEO in an old Civic and it didn't clean ZIP.

I think my after photos were a tad bit lighter in colored compared to the pre HDEO due to the sunlight.

Lol, yeah, I remember! Heck, I'm swimming in so much SLOB I should have highly polished internals.

I didn't think it ever was. It was a "new" base stock that was classified as group V merely b/c group V is a catch all exotic category.
