My 25+ year old 3.5HP Honda powered Northstar pump (Comet AXD 2524 2400PSI, 2.4GPM) is finally pooping out after pretty hard use - I mean that little guy put in some long days!

I could rebuild or better just replace the pump (knock off pump $235). But honestly I need more power.

Recommendations?

Buy a real brand, Simpson with a Honda engine for $50 more over that Dewalt:

Go to Tractor Supply website and enter 116827099 it is also available at other retailers.

also less power. 270cc vs 420.
the way pressure washers work 4000psi or 3.5gpm its not 4000psi @3.5gpm.
the "dewalt" will be noticeably more powerful.
tsc charges 100$ to ship to store. if not instock locally.

The one you linked is however very similar to the "lowes exclusive" I mentioned that doesnt have a ship to store delivery charge.

I dont have a problem with the dewalt brand as long as you arent paying extra for that name (and in this case you arent)

I noticed that. I wonder if the extra power is needed, makes the engine more reliable, performs better in the real world???
My local TSC has the Simpson in stock.

I have a gas powered pressure washer and I ruined the pump by being a dummy. Me? I'm tall, but skinny @ 6'2" 161 and get wore down using a power washer. I couldn't imagine using that Simpson or Dewalt.

What? 270cc Honda vs 420cc China, I'd take the Honda, 4000psi OR 3.5gpm? What are you talking about? They go hand in hand, high flow high psi, you want both. Engine/power doesn't matter. Enough is enough, more doesn't matter. I swapped my tired 11hp B&S with a Honda GX390. Nothing changed because the pump is the same. I just had an extra motor.

The way they are rated you put the restrictive 0degree nozzle on the end and its 4000psi (but not 4gpm)
then you put the 40degree on and its 4gpm but not 4000psi.

I have a wand with a psi and flowmeter on it..
the way they market power washers is sorta like peak watts on car audio.. semi worthless.

Also the dewalt is rated 4gpm and the simpson 3.5gpm so there are more differences than just the engine

Still not entirely true. More flow is better at a given psi. Thats why they size the nozzles by flow as well as degree. The rating isn't 100% accurate but it is what it is. You can definitely tell a difference.

What does that mean exactly. What part are you disputing as not entirely true? What can you tell a difference with?

I'm not sure we arent pretty close to saying the same thing in different words.

I'm saying they have different sized (orifice) nozzles for different flow rates. So a machine rated for more flow should indeed flow more throughout the range of nozzles. You are right though, a 0 degree will flow less than the other extreme fan or turbo nozzle or whatever. We are close to agreement, and you're right the homeowner grade machines may be fudging the numbers some.

I just went through this. I got pretty flustered by the whole thing. It seems that the gpm number is effectively more valuable than the psi. So if you stay towards 4 gpm, there aren’t that many options, especially if you want a cat, AR, or other name brand pump.

at which point then you wonder if the 1800rpm belt drive with the knock-off pump might be a better value than the 3600rpm direct drive with a named pump, and a man departs with an additional few hundo. I mean, I knew a guy.

I bought this one. Ordered it Friday. Was supposed to be delivered this coming Friday and was delivered today. From Florida!

Beefy unit! I put the handle on is all. Should fire it up tomorrow!!

Here is something I find amazing: Inside the box was a quart of oil. Amsoil SME 10W-30. At first I was like how did this get off the shelf over in the box (not kidding). I'm thinking it's a corporate account, or some lucky dealer has that account!

Hhahahahaha finally fired it up just TODAY for the first time.

I was amazed how much splooge came out of the exhaust. First it blew blue billows of beautiful blue smoke, then in splooged hot wet black splooge..............seems to have slowed for now.

Was not expecting this. Ran it for a break it. Different levels and throttle settings.

Made wonderful pressure and value.

All seems OK for now.
