Which Fully Synthetic?

My car specifies 5w30, and it's currently clocked at 28k miles. will be doing an oil change at 31k miles. been running on semi-synthetic (3000 miles OCI) all these while, and the car is a daily workhorse, driving in the city, bout 20miles a trip, 2 times a day, 5 days a week. with the fully synthetic i intend to run at least 10,000 miles OCI.

some options i have here
Redline 5w30 USD$17/quart
Mobil 1 0w30 or 0w40 USD$11.5/quart
Mobil 1 EP 5w30 USD$12.4/quart
German Castrol 0w30 USD$12.4/quart
Amsoil 100% Synthetic ASL 5w30 USD$12.4/quart

which one should i go with and why? also what are the pros/cons on using 0w30 over 5w30? temperature never goes below 65F here even when it rains. sunny all year around.

all listed are fine, I would go w/ the cheapest syn that matches what your owners manual calls for.

I would not go beyond 6k with out some kind of UOA done.

one problem though, nobody does UOA here.. so that's a problem. the engine is a 1.3L 4-cylinder running low compression ratio with toyota variable valve timing, i guess its similar to the xA/xB you guys have there, specifies 90-octane fuels but i pump 92 octane.

Why not a less expensive group 3 OCI of around 7K? Most here feel comfortable doing that without a UOA.

solid advise, but the exact same semi-syn i'm using is specified for factory 7k OCI for another car by the same manufacturer. for some reason my car states a 3k OCI in the service manual...even when both have the same engine. but it doesn't matter since it's going to be out of warranty by then, which explains why i'm looking for alternatives.

AVAXIS, I would go w/AMSOIL ASL OIL and their oil & air filters. The other thing, get their preferred customer status and it drops the overall cost plus it is delivered to your door.

I am not a dealer, but have used their products on/off for the last 15-20 years and I really like their products. I think the ASL 5w30 oil is really good. It is one of the best in my book for most gasoline engines.

With a little 1.3l 4 cyl, I would think any one of those oils should do ok on a 10k OCI.

Of those picks, I like the Amsoil -- it has proven to be an excellent oil that can go well beyond 10K miles in many cases.

Avaxis, I drive a 2005 Scion Xb with the same engine with about the same driving condition. Two 20 mile city trips per day plus two 25 mile trips between home and work each day. The car currently has 92k miles and runs just as strong as the day the company got it. I do the maintenance on it myself. I use Pennzoil Syn Blend every 5k miles. Even with the harsh driving conditions it endures ("drive it like you don't own it", because I don't .

) I expect that car to last well beyond 200k miles.

Why are oil prices outside the USA so outta hand? I would definately go with Amsoil ASL and run it out to atleast 15k miles or whatever it is in KM's or more. With those prices, it would be a waste of good oil and money not to extend intervals by a big margin.

Running the synthetic oil of your choice is possible BUT be mindful about the oil filter to see if it'll do 10K. Even if you had a fully synthetic don't try it unless you have a big filter attached for the motor.

As far as the synthetic oil of choice I'd get the best your pocket can afford. I'd see if you can get a better selection in your region/Malaysa. The Mobil 1 is a good possibility since it seems to be the least expensive per quart. I never tried Redline myself so that is up to you. I've always had good results/satisfaction with the M1 in 5w-30 grade so see it the store can get that for you. I wouldn't run 0W-30 in your engine.

it seems that an oil called Q8 is quite popular in that forum. don't know if its Group III "fully synthetic" or not. for the price could get Mobil 1.

since I'm not doing any UOA and Amsoil claims severe service of 15,000 miles, I guess its a safe bet. anything else I should know? and thanks everybody for the suggestions
