Which filter ... Wix or MC?

I agree with vad. Both have the threaded end bypass. Both probably have similar filtering performance. The Wix has the silicone ADBV- nice but not worth a huge premium.

It depends on what is conveniently available or on sale. Either will work just fine.

Someone has mentioned that there are different 'quality' levels to the FL1a(round holes, oval holes, different bypass location...). There is a thread here somewhere about it.

Also, Motorcraft isn't available for every application. Wix(Napa/Carquest) is!

Buy the Wix online at fleetfilter.com or filter1.com. Some Napa Golds I use are as low as $2.82 each. All my FL300s Motorcrafts have the silicone ADBV also. The only one I purchased that isn't silicone is the x-long FL1a.

With the shipping and handling charge it's not of a great deal as it looks to be at first.
Not worth it unless your order in great quantities.

I plan to go Wix from now on. When you pour the oil in to pre-fill the filter you can see how long it takes to penetrate the media. Fleetguard LF697 flowed through the media like water. I was suprised that Wix flowed pretty good too. Very little rotating of the filter needed. With Purolators and Motorcrafts it seemed to take longer to get all the oil in.

NOTE: None of the info I gave above is scientific, that is same oil, same temperature for the oil, etc., but is merely recall observations. So, try it yourself.

But I would rather have a freer flowoing media. It may not filter quite as fine, but it is in bypass less, so the net effect may be that the freer flowing filter actually keeps more crud out of the engine.

I suspect the Wix has a thicker can than Motorcraft (or Maxlife) as I just checked all three and MC and Maxlife bow in easily, but not the Wix. Again, try it yourself as this is not scientific. Best to try it on used filters.

That's probably the least scientific observation on the oil flow I've ever heard of.

In regards of the can thickness...
That would be the least of my concerns since a possibility of the can rupturing due to the oil pressure is nearly non-existent.

Well it certainly doesn't say anything about hot flow under pressure, but it does tell me something about the filter media in general and it seems there should be some positive relation between this cold (or lukewarm) gravity flow and hot pressure flow.

Not worth it Vad!

A majority of folks here drive 12-15K per year & change oil three times per year (4-5K). A two year supply of oil filters bought on sale is nothing really.

That $2.82 Wix/Napa Gold is $9 at my Napa Auto parts store. If it costs me $5 apiece with shipping-included for each one when I buy six, then it's more-than worth it to buy them online.

It's not worth to me.
I buy MC's at Walmart when I need them, which is not very often.
They're priced there at $3.50 and $4.50 a piece.
I'm not using Wix/Napa filters since they are not any better than Motorcrafts.
I use a synthetic oil and change it (and the filter) once per year as a lot of folks here.

BTW, on what bases do you believe that the majority of folks here change oil three times per year?
