Any truck you get for $1,500 is going to be pretty used up so I would just buy which ever you can find in the best condition, regardless of brand or model.
Up here in New England they are all pretty rotted out at the 20 year mark. Any work underneath requires hammers, cold chisels, and torch's, because no bolts move anymore.

Yeah, rust is the #1 nighmare with an old truck. I learned that lesson the hard way with my Explorer. After 13 years in PA, there wasn't a single part on the chassis that could be removed without cutting or torching. Rust ruins everything! It's very frustrating when the truck is otherwise mechanically sound and has lots of life left in the powertrain.
The trucks he posted from Craigslist didn't have any obvious cab corner or wheel arch rot visible in the pics, or the frame sagging a lot of 88-98 GM pickups have though. Rust is really the only thing that can't be fixed on an old truck.
