my Volvo says to use DOT 4 only. i think its partly due to the traction control using the brakes for actuation. thus heating up the fluid. guy who track S60R record significantly lower brake temps with the traction control disabled.

The only vehicles I know that cannot use DOT 3 are Harley-Davidson motorcycles. They specify silicone-based fluids, and probably require it.

Not any more. My 06 FXD uses dot3 or 4. I use synpower.

My 1996 Ford Contour used the brakes for traction control...but it specified DOT 3. Wonder if the Ford Mondeo (the European version of that car) specifies DOT 4?

Actually Volvo requires DOT4+ (a.k.a. DOT5.1) brake fluid, a spec higher than DOT4 and meets the DOT5 silicone performance spec with conventional chemistry. (DOT5.1 is the same as 4+ and not silicone). Volvo brand and ATE are some of the DOT4+ brake fluids.
