Yeah 96 is a pain, I just went over and talked to a buddy of mine who is a mechanic, has worked on my Jeep a million times. We decided on O2 sensors for a 97, so I'll order those now.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll update this thread with how it runs.

I once owned a WRX I once modded. I put a new Bosch universal O2 sensor on a larger downpipe I installed. The Bosch sensor didn't last 10K miles. I replaced it with an NTK O2 sensor purchased off Amazon which was on the car when I sold it. 66K+ on the NTK.

How many O2 sensors does your XJ have? Mine has one, precat. 2/96 build. There's a recall to replace the cat and add another O2 sensor, post cat, but I figure it's been the way it is for 21 years, don't mess with it.

Mine has 2, one pre-cat up near the oil pan and another in the back of the catalytic converter. I'll check my build date when I get home.

I just saw this now.

I'd change it ASAP. Otherwise the whole vehicle is likely to just die on you in traffic. The ASD relay is fused on the same circuit as the upstream sensor. Usually when you get P0132, it won't be long before the sensor shorts out completely and blows the 10A fuse ... and you're out of business! No fuel, spark ...

Yup, NTKs are what went into my Jeep. One went bad so I replaced all four (I have pre-cats and Cali emissions), no issues so far and that was 50k miles ago.

On your 2000 is the bank 2 downstream sensor literally touching the transmission bellhousing?

I'd have to look.

I actually had one of the manifold cats going bad, so I replaced the manifold cats. One O2 sensor was bad, so I planned on replacing just that one. When I pulled out the old manifold cats, I saw how rusty the O2 sensors were and figured it was easier to replace them all at that point. Since my manifold cats are aftermarket, they might be spaced a little differently.

I have lost the bank 2 downstream sensor more than once because it's touching the bellhousing. The wires are pushed, hard, against the bennousing. I rub a bit of insulation off as I'm putting it in it is so close.

Both of mine are dead but no code (yet). I was trying to pull ol' billybob and his powerstroke with bald tires up a steep hill on an ATV trail. Apparently 5 minutes at 4000 RPM will melt the cats or something. There was a strong sulphur smell and now the sensors have the exact same reading.

Put in the new O2 sensors (for a 97) and drove it like I stole it around the block a few times. Runs incredible, power all over the place. No CEL yet. Wires were a little long for the rear one, I'll get out some zip ties.

I'll update this thread again after I put some miles on it.

I’ve put 110 miles on it so far. Still runs perfect and no CEL. I’m a happy camper.

Maybe put some new sensors in the Camry for more power?
