I usually go to autozone but my local mechanic said stay away from them.
autozone?
advanced auto parts
napa
murray's

They all suck. You need to find one that has either an older parts guy thats been in it for a while or a retired mechanic if you want the right parts and no "It's not in the computer so we don't have it". stuff.

i only go to Carquest and NAPA for parts unless its dealer only. i will go to Autozone for the GC, and other random parts places when they have sales on brand name parts.

Napa and Carquest (Regional Warehouse store - mega parts availability) get my business. The Napa I use has nice mix of old hands and younger guys getting trained right - and its reassuring to see the massive racks of parts books that actually get used - rather than the computer says...

I've been getting brake parts from Checker/ PartsAmerica.com (Raybestos). Lately though I've been going through Carquest. I hate to say this, but on a lot of OEM (Motorcraft) parts, internet is the only way to go for the best price.

i have a couple of friends that own repair shops that let me use there tools and lifts so i can work on my own car with my own parts. he tells me not to use autozone parts he says there cheaper for a reason. i trust him with his advice because hes not making any money on the parts. same as my other friends who own shops

I've been going to the original Murrays store, in Redford, for over 30 years. They take good care of me.

Much as I like Murrays, my advice is to go where you get the best price and service in your local area. After all, it's the people that count.

If you need a little help or advice with your parts, go to some of the better shops, like NAPA, where they have a machine shop associated with the store. They often have old timers behind the counter.

AZ has decent, for the price brake pads. SORRIEST steering and suspension line I've ever seen. Any employees with promise and drive go to work at OReilly. Advance, mostly name brand good quality parts.

Don't ignore the ladies behind the counter! They know you think them stupid,,,so they often try hard to suprise you.

I recently bought some Motorcraft parts from Rockauto.com that were way cheaper than anywhere else.

I tend to use rockauto.com and Kragen for most of my parts.

I like to do my homework online, and Kragen/PartsAmerica have (by far) the most useful website of any brick-and-mortar stores around here. Kragen's in-store selection on many (but not all) parts is low-end stuff, but if you order through the website it's often the very same parts on offer at RockAuto.

RockAuto is usually cheaper, so I normally go with them unless I have some doubts about whether I'll be in over my head on some planned job. If I do, I'll tend to order them from Kragen, paying a bit more for the flexibility to simply walk the parts back into a local store if I don't end up using them.

I couldn't have said it better myself!
Kragen/Advance Auto Parts/Checkers all at www.partsamerica.com

We don't have alot to choose from here...Lordco, NAPA, some small parts stores. Alot don't like Lordco, but I like them, seems they have always been cheaper, and get parts in quick.

I agree with go where the service is good.

Pepboys here is pure #@$%!. All people my age. They're the poser car fanatics, the ones who all say they're gear heads, but need to have a shop do their work for them. Usually the people who work there are the ones driving the lowered cars with the body kits, old (not classic) muscle cars that work 50% of the time, and are quick to give advice but won't take any. Ontop of it all their prices are horrible.

Advance auto is where I usually go, to the people there it's just a job, they're not car enthusiests so they don't give advice, but they're willing to help you find anything you need and are very friendly. Plus their prices are the best.

Autozone I used to like, they have older folks working that know a lot about cars and the store, they recommend extras (when I changed my first thermostat I went to pepboys, they gave me the wrong size and no o-ring. When I went to autozone they gave me the correct one and said "do you need an O-ring?"). When I was getting information on how to change struts, the guy working was an ex mechanic and told me a lot of useful information about the job. Prices are competitive with advance auto too.

But... I don't go there anymore, after the last time I walked in (I go once a month if that, usually to get their FAR deals), as I walked down the aisle the older man at the counter said to a customer and his fellow employee "these #@$%! kids have nothing better to do all day than to come in here and spend all their money to modify their cars". I don't appreciate that additude, even though im sure he would never say that to my face.

But I only ever would go to these stores for certain things, such as oil, cleaners, or a part if im in dire need of it immedietly. If my radiator were to blow today, or my alternator were to fail, i'd be hitching a ride to advance.

For not so urgent things, it's online. Such as if my brake pads started to sqeal, i'd order them and replace during the weekend, or if I needed new struts or a tuneup or a master cylinder, you can't beat free shipping and cheap prices.

Good bets are usually rockauto, tirerack and parts america.
