Which Amsoil 75W-90 Gear Lube?

I will be replacing my Front and Rear Diff fluids on my 2013 Toyota 4runner SR5 at 15k with an Amsoil Gear Lube (To get some use of my PC subscription)

Toyota calls for a 75W-85 GL-5

My 4runner pretty much is just a Daily Driver, with some light off road duties occasionally. I don't do any towing.

I am trying to decide if I should use the:

75W-90 Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube
or
Severe Gear® 75W-90

It seems that the Severe Gear® 75W-90 may be a little too hardcore for me, but I want what is best for my rig!

I've always used Severe Gear® 75W-90 in my Toyota Tacoma and now my Subaru.

I always went to Severe gear because I assume it's better than the long life. Simlilar to SS over XL oils in Amsoil.

I went with the severe gear for my car also. Probably overkill but if you the "best" it is the one to go with.

Three posts in three years? That's a model of restraint ... is that because you don't frequent here much, or you just don't post much? I ask because if you've been here much, you'd know there really is no such thing as "best" fluids, at least in a manner that any of us could FAIRLY and ACCURATELY say.

"Best" must first be described as to the parameters and conditions you seek to satisfy. What is "best" for one set of circumstances is not likely to be "best" for another.


That in mind, there are many good fluids that will help the vehicle last a long, long time.

Unless you intend to greatly increase your OCIs, then you don't "need" the "best" synthetic, despite what many folks will tell you, because rhetoric and mythology run wide and deep, even here at BITOG.

Your diffs will survive a long healthy life with any decent 75w-90, 80w-90, etc in GL-5. The Toyota diffs are generally robust and not finicky about what brand/grade is used. GL-5 is a good starting point, but the SAE J2360 does a better job of defining lubes that succeed in harsh gear environements. There are many that pass this test, even many conventional oils that do well. See this thread I started a while back:

I emplore you to make sure you use a lube that is of the correct API/OEM specs, and the grade will matter little if you only vary up/down a bit. You do have warranty issues to contend with, should you be inclined to worry about such things.

Amsoil's SVG is a great product, and I have recommended it before. But it is NOT the only game in town, it is NOT the only lube that will do a good job, and it may or may not be the "best" depending upon each unique circumstance.
