Found a vendor with high quality oil in larger containers. What do you think of using one of these in the VP 5.0? the diesel oils seem to be high spec. Any problems using them in a gas sterndrive?
1. Partsynthetic automobile:
SAE 10W-40; API SL/ CF; ACEA A3, B3; VW 501.00, 505.00; MB 229.1; BMW; Porsche.
---------OR----------------------------------
2. SHPD-olja (Super High Performance Diesel):
SAE 15W-40; API CI-4, CH-4, SL; ACEA E7, E5, E3, B4, B3, A3; Global DHD-1; MB 228.3; Volvo VDS-3; MAN M3275; Cummins 20076, -77, -78; Caterpillar ECF1; MTU Typ 2; Mack EO-M Plus; (Allison C4)

Any 15w-40 SJ, SL, SM, CI-4, CH-4 diesel spec are generally recommended for the GM v-8 based gasoline engines by other manufactures such as PCM, Indmar, and Marine Power. Volvo buys the same engine block from GM. The additive package in diesel oils is stronger. Indmar allows 10w-30 up to 50 deg F. Volvo has recommended straight 30 synthetic, which might be better in Sweden with cold air and water temps, but difficult to find. Be sure to follow your owner's manual if the engine is still under warranty.

Have had a chat with a Volvo engineer. The requirement is any SH oil on 15w-50 or outside ie. 5w-50. Diesel oil is also ok if it has a gas service spec too. The 50 weight is because some of the V8s do not have an oil cooler. If there is one then maybe 40 would work. The "extra" corrosion protection was not a big issue so long you changed oil before storage and used the "fogging oil in the gasoline" procedure before storage. No need for synthetic either but would run a bit smoother. This is for recreational boats. For industrial use like on ferries and such, other recommendations apply.
