Which adbv are "high quality"?

My guess is that it has more to do with hype. Filter companies can show you that this material preformes better than this material and that is what sells the next higher grade. It does not matter in the brain of the consumer if the lesser material is more than adiquit for the application. Better is better to the consumer.

If less is more then think how much more and more would be.

On my old car, which seemed to have clatter at start up with some filters, the ones that worked best had both types. It didn't seem to matter whether the ADBV was black, orange, or red. Use what works. The ones that didn't (for the 89 Honda, at least) were Amsoil, Mobil 1, Fram, and Nippon. The ones that worked were Wix, Mahle, Purolator, Super Tech, and Bosch. Price meant nothing as far as draining overnight went. Go figure.

So if most Amsoil filters are really a Donaldson Synhetic on the inside, does that mean they also use Nitrile ADBVs? Or do they stop the productions line and switch ADBVs when it's time to make the batch that goes in the Amsoil can?

Afaik, currently Amsoil filters are now made buy either Champ or Wix. They use of Donaldson synthetic media is better explained in the link below which was recently posted (fairly good and based on testing procedure of member river_rat). Apparently Amsoil agreed to purchase the rights to use Donaldson's synthetic media and renamed it. But Donaldson does not manufacture Amsoil filters. And when I referred to Donaldson as premium I was referring to the synthetic media version, not the one shown in the link below.

I don't think one can dispute that a silicone adbv has better durability and maintains its pliability longer (extended oci's) and over greater temperture extremes than nitrile. Whether that matters for engines that have no issues with start up rattle is another discusssion.

... look at posts #191 and #192. Don't think these guys really know what they are talking about. "A smaller oil filter can makes the oil pressure go up" ... yeah, sure.

I hope you are not referring to me making this up. If so just reply right here and I will send you the link in a PM. I have NOTHING to hide! I left the forum site and peoples name out of it to not embarrass them.

Interesting. From some informal canvassing 3 years ago, I drew the conclusion that most Amsoils were the equivalent of the Donaldson Premium (Black & Gold can) except for a few application where Donaldson didn't have an exact match in which case a Wix was used.

If your info is correct, I'd be fairly impressed that Amsoil would be so specific as to source the filtration element from one company, then send it elewhere for assmebly & ADVB. Kind of complicated & inefficient by todays business practices of one-stop outsourcing.

I`m not sure what to make of the rest of the inof on the EvoForum - he lists the ADBV material contrary to the informal color-coding standard in almost every case - notably stating the PureOne as Nitrile whereas the Purolator website claims Silicone for the PureOne line and from what I remember it says so right on the box??

Yes, all PureOne filters have the red silicone ADBV.

Yes, the OP of that thread had much difficulty with his identification of the adbv material, as was noted when the link was first posted last month (linked below)*. However some of his filtration results duplicate that of river_rats previous testing such as the excellent P1 filtration results and the relative inefficieny of the no endcap type filters, which was later confimed by Amsoil's 2011 ISO testing of the Toyota oem. But, as for the after comments (as Zee has pointed out) and some conclusions drawn, like most tests of this type, I take them with a grain of salt. Imo, river_rats conclusions were more objective and let the filtration results speak for themselves without bias.

As for the Amsoil filter, other than pics, dissections and comments posted here honestly not that familiar with their specific manufacturing process. The Donaldson synthetic media use has been long posted pretty much as described in the previous link. How that would work with now supplying either Wix and/or Champ, or even if that's still holds true, can't say. But the similarities to Wix and Champ construction can be clearly seen in that link. That and there is at least one thread here(Bitog), not too old, showing identical tapping plates between a Royal Purple and an Amsoil filter. Ok, just found it, pics and thread..... https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/posts/2552323/
Beyond that, can't confirm the design of current Amsoil synthetic media.

*Evo oil filter testing Bitog thread.

No, no, not you at all - I mean the guys in the other forum that you quoted.

Ok. Because I have the link to what was said. I even gave positive advice about FRAM oil filters. (OMG! Someone needs to check my temperature!)

I suppose I should clarify my earlier post. On a vehicle that was affected by ADBV's that allowed oil to drain from the filter overnight I found that that the material for the ADBV made no difference. Some silicon and some nitrile ADBV's allowed the filter to drain and some didn't. I used all of these filters for 10K mile OCI's. So, you'll just have to try for yourself. There is no panacea.

Ultimately, the brief start up clatter did not seem to hinder my ability to keep the car longer than I should have. Compression was still fine and fuel economy had not changed in 355,000 miles. I believe that engine design is far more significant than oil or filter used.

I guess what I am saying is you can worry too much over nothing!
