So I know where the engines on my OPE is made.

Craftsman Lawnmower, (Briggs 675, Made in USA)
Craftsman 2-stage Snowblower, (Chongqing 208cc OHV, Made in China)
.

My question, is where is the actual unit itself made. Where is it all assembled? For some reason, this is purely without any real knowledge other than hearing/reading it somewhere, sometime. Snoblower= Canada, Lawnmower=USA. Does anyone have any idea? Both are made by MTD I believe.

Nick,

IIRC, Craftsman walk-behind mowers are still U.S. made. The first 3 digits of the model number can be cross-referenced on the sites from XS650.

Craftsman Snowblowers, newer models are made by AYP (American Yard Products) or Murray. I think both are still U.S. made.

I'm not sure AYP is called AYP anymore.

They went Electrolux for awhile, then Husqvarna. Craftsman snowblers have always been primarily Murray designs, with some MTDs mixed in. I assume when Murray was still alive, a Murray plant made them. Having gone defuct, I believe 'AYP', took over the Murray design.

Murray yard products is now owned by Briggs & Stratton, along with Simplicity and Snapper brands. Generally speaking, their high end stuff is pretty well made. Not a Wheel Horse but pretty decent for the average homeowner. I think they are a better product than Husqvarna and MTD, although MTD can make a good product if they want to. For instance the new 2011 Craftsman Professional 28 HP garden tractor model 24728984 is an MTD product. they are pretty stout for a Craftsman; full length 9 gauge frame rails, Hydro-Gear G7 serviceable hydro or the dual range Peerless 6 speed manual. if their attachments weren't so poor they would be an excellent value for 2,600.00 dollars.

Electrolux owns ayp, husqvarna, jonsered, poulan, and partner.
Ayp supplies many mower brands, poulan, husqvarna (non commercial), craftsman, weedeater (walmart push). Husqvarna are the supplier of their own commercial Zturns, saws (except 3 cheapest models that are poulan made), and trimmers, im unsure of blowers. Poulan sells under their name and weedeater (trimmers), the 3 entry level husqvarna saws, and craftsman 2cycle products.

this is true, and is also the reason your finding more and more new ope powered by "chonda" engines rather than briggs. As many OPE companies are now looking at briggs as a competitor rather than just an engine supplier.

Electrolux spun off Husky and the entire OPE range about five years ago.

Husqvarna is now separately traded on the Swedish Stock Exchange.

You gotta be careful with the Husky/Husqvarna terms. There is (or was?) a "Husky" brand that was made by MTD. I believe it was a Tractor Supply product.

MTD has more brands/lines they trip over theirselves, if it has their "3 grass blade" signiture, it should say "buyer be ware"! in fact when the cub 2000 series came out, cub/mtd sent dealers a new sign wich read "cub cadet by MTD" within 2 months they sent tape that matched the sign with instructions to cover the "by MTD" part! this was in the '90's even tho MTD has made cub since 1981
