Yeah, I think with a 80 mile range older Leaf in the winter in Calgary, you might need this! We have 3 towns all about 8 miles from our place and some days after taking the kids to ski practice, getting groceries, going to the farm supply, dropping the other kid off at their friends place, etc, I am amazed how many miles I put on the car in a day.
A 212 mile range Leaf is a different scenario for sure, and would be fine for a second local car, or maybe a ski trip to Quebec car as they do seem to have chargers everywhere.

I like the concept. I could see myself buying such an animal as my first EV to try.

However, to play devils advocate - 80 mile range is pretty low. What is the real advantage of such a vehicle vs say a $8000 Prius. Yes it would have more miles and maybe be older at that price, but they seem to last forever, repairs are fairly inexpensive even if it needs a battery, and you can drive as long as your willing to keep adding gas?

There is actually one for sale not far from me. How does one determine if it has the "lizard" battery?

A 8k Prius is likely a retired uber that's worn out with everything (suspension, interior, 200k miles, 15 years old), it is good if you want a cheap ride you can keep repairing like an old corolla.

A $6k Leaf is good for a local retiree car or a teen first car, it is still in decent shape, can get you places, but you need another car in the family to go far. Hey, you won't embarrass your girlfriend and you can still say it is enjoyable to ride in unlike the worn out Prius.
