Where did all the Ford Excursions go?

I know they only sold them for a few years and didn't make a ton of them. Though you would still see them out and about. I don't think I've seen one for the last few years now. I still occasionally see a 90s Bronco running around but never an Excursion. Where they not reliable?

Considering how old even the newest ones are now, I feel like I still see quite a few of them!

There weren't many vehicles of it's type to compare with. I suppose there was the 2500 Suburban which died around the same time. I'd say I see more Excursions running around than those.

But Excursions were kind of unique even to the 3/4 Suburban since they could be had with the Powerstroke (and it seems most had it). Probably the biggest selling point when they were new.

There are several around here locally. Most I see are gas, but I do see the odd diesel. An Excursion with the 7.3L was a pretty solid rig.

Lady who plays the organ in church still drives an old one ...
I can remember when her kids and friends were young enough to pile in there - she always drives it alone now. Very, very, loud diesel ...

Lot of stuff is going overseas. MY BIL works in overseas container shipping on the Dock in Boston.

Big market in Europe and Asia.

Same with Hummer H1

Now I'm going to do a Autotrader search.

The Excursion with the Diesel likely gets a couple MPG better fuel mileage than a gas Nissan Pathfinder V6 or jeep Cherokee six'er of the same era. My '14 Rogue 4 banger only got a absolutely miserable 23 - and with my driving style I usually get near government highway rating in around town use.

Very timely. I saw one yesterday and thought it's been a while since I saw one.

There were model years with the 7.3 and 6.0; the ones that are left (that I typically see for sale) are immaculate, probably garaged all their lives, and still ~$15k with 200k miles on them. And they don't stick around long. There have been several people who have swapped the newer '08-10 front ends on them, since underneath everything is the same (other than headlight harnesses), and the body lines match. They actually look quite sharp that way.

Ford is still building them… They all have the eco-boost engine now and a rated for 24 highway… Quite a difference from the old ones

You're right.

They were never, ever a big seller. It was an answer to a problem that didn't exist. Somebody wanting to own something larger than a Suburban. Chevrolet did focus groups when they decided to redesign the Suburban-no one in the focus group said they want it to be bigger.....

1999 18,315units
2000 50,786
2001 34,710
2002 29,042
2003 26,259
2004 20,010
2005 16,283

The Chevrolet Subdivision conceptual SUV was never mass produced

There are a couple that I see around my area (both sound like they have diesels), which surprises me because there is a LOT of road salt used through the winter here in Canada; and vehicles develop rust quickly unless you take some aggressive preventative measures otherwise. If I am correct that the last model year they were made was '05 then I am impressed by how nice they both look.

Yet hasn't the suburban increased in size with every generation?

They were actually pretty popular initially, but the vigilante green movement with help in no small part from the mainstream media, demonized them for being an 'obscenely large' SUV. That in reality was the same size as millions of pickups running around the country.

The wheelbase the last 18 years has stayed within an inch of each other. The overall length has increased only 5 inches in the same time. Still well within specs to fit inside a standard garage.

No-they were not the same size. They were the biggest personal use SUV on the road at the time. Maybe they were the same length of an F250-since they used that truck's frame. But back when the Excursions were manufactured-F250s were not really personal use vehicles-unless you were towing.
