Where a 7317 won't fit

Not with Nissan OE filters failing due to them cheaping out. I lost a new Note Engine with a improperly designed China sourced Nissan filter, then issues with Grupo Gonher filters on my Rogue Select due to adbv inverting (umbrella)

Nissan China O.E. fibreboard endcaps with diameter slip fit clearance to the canister I.D!
if you don't recall, pressurized lubricant coming from the oil pump must first pass around the base end endcap -

Yes I have been seeing this come up several times since I have joined I am not experiencing any issues currently and would normally run a 6 month oci however I’m going to change out in 3 months and maybe just discard the two Nissan filters I have left and use the eco gards i recently purchased.

I got bored and cut apart a Home Depot clearance filter. If your a 3953a fan it was on clearance for $1. Or maybe it was Lowe’s, pretty sure it was HD.

The 3953a had 41 pleats (counting the crimp) 2.25” tall by 46” for 103.5” sqr for media. A big center tube 1 3/8”.

The 7317 had 44 pleats (counting the crimp) 2.375” tall by 44.5” for 105.7” sqr for media. Center tube is 1 1/8”.

The 3953a had 70 holes in the center tube and the 7317 had 84.

Pretty much a wash.

If for whatever reason one is considering the wider but shorter 3593a (alt 9688), many/most newer Honda (7317) and Nissan (6607) won't permit installation of said filter. The Hondas now have either block or oil pan restriction. The Nissan have restriction ring around filter, at least on the common 2.5L engine. My advice before purchase, make sure it will screw on. That said, little if any gain using it over the 7317 and equivalent applications.

As for Nissan, personally never seen one calling for the shorty 6607 where the ~.75" longer 7317 filter didn't work just fine. Same specs as 6607 with more media area. Fwiw, I've always used the 7317 on Nissan calling for the shorty.

Similar situation to the SAE thread shorty 4967 vs the longer 4386. That would apply to many Toyotas.

My 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R calls for a 9688. I use the 3593A as it is larger but still fits (I'm restricted on length and diameter).

Can still get two FilterMags on the 3593A, if they are situated strategically.
