2001 GMC Jimmy 3.6 Vortec. 2 wheel drive. Lots and lots and lots of short trips. Occasional highway's. It hauls her and 3 kids around and sometimes more. She drives it hard too. lol. Oh and never waits till it warms up, no matter how many times I tell her. It has 180k currently on it now. I put Mobil 1 0w30 in at 178k so only 2k mi. so far. I've never sampled this engine before and I'm not sure what the universal averages are for this vehicle.

So, how long to leave it in before pulling it and sampling? I will of course use the UOA to judge if I can go farther and make adjustments from there, but just wondering what do most people do on an unknown, on their first sampling... 5k? 6k? 7.5k?

p.s. it hasn't used a single drop of oil so far. Runs fantastic on this oil. Starts super easy now, very quiet and smooth. I love this stuff. I'm confident it will go a long way. I may even change all my vehicles over to Mobil 1 0w30. Both cars I have on it now run like a dream. :D

Plus I heard that Joe Gibbs and some NASCAR people have been running a version of the Mobil 1 0w30. Anyone heard that? I think I read it here. If so, wow. I can't wait to see the samples on these two cars. I'm confident they will do extremely well. Btw.. I hate the 5w30 of Mobil 1.

first change I would pull it at 6k. It will do a lot of cleaning to start with

Joe gibbs has their own line of oil used by JGR.

Define "short trip" -- are we talking 1-2 miles? 5-10 miles? How many trips per day? Does the engine warm up fully?

M1 should be just fine for at least 5,000 miles of hard use. If you're concerned about its endurance, I'd wait until you put at least 5,000 miles on it before sending it off to sample. Sending it off too early, even with hard service, is not likely to show anything untoward.

Mobil 1 5w30 is a great oil as well. I know guys running it out to 10-15K OCIs on Chevy trucks with 2-300K.

Haven't they changed the formula since then though? Meaning, most of those miles would have been on the old stuff?? I'm just not impressed with it compared to other Mobil 1 oils.

p.s. I know I read something just the other day about some kind of modified version of Mobil 1's 0w30 and NASCAR. Pretty sure it was BITOG. Maybe someone can fill us in.

Mobil 1 5w30 is one of the few oils to pass the Honda HTO-6 high temp spec. My friends have puy most of those miles on since 2000. One friend has a 2000 Taurus Duratech with 310K all on 5-30 8-10K OCIs. Another has a 99 Silverado with 270K, 10-15K OCIs.

That's pretty impressive tig1. I guess I just give it a hard time cause the used oil analysis I've seen of it on my car (mazdaspeed forums) haven't really impressed by comparison to the other Mobil 1 oils. I know, I know, used oil analysis really don't tell us much of anything to begin with, other than how the oil's holding up. But UOA in and UOA out, it throws twice or more Iron and sometimes even Copper. I don't know why that is. And realistically, I realize even at those levels we are way WAY below any kind of concerning levels.

I will give Mobil 1 5w30 this credit though, and I can say this without hesitation. It's the only OTC PCMO 30 weight I've seen that has been completely shear resistant in my car. It stays in grade, near perfect at that, even over 7k or more intervals. And that IS dang impressive. Especially when most OTC PCMO oils shear out in a little over 1k mi.

Still love the Mobil 1 0w30 more tho. ;P

I wouldn't think of pulling it before 5k unless you think it's being used in extremely severe conditions. Personally, I'd probably let it go 6k and pull it, then see what it's like. Without any more information than what was written in the original post, I wouldn't be surprised if it could easily go 7-8k.

I have to say, I don't think there is such a thing as the 3.6 vortec.

All jimmy's 1995-2006 only offered the 4.3.

No time like the present to do a used oil analysis. Oil prices have gone up faster than oil analysis. The dollars stay home. Buy new oil and who knows which America hater gets your money.

UOA at 10k, I believe any synthetic worth its salt should go to 10k easy. Most conv. oils will do 6k+.

you have no idea how many customers we have that go to 10k on our valvoline bulk oil. yet there engines continue rolling on down the road until the next time they feel like getting there oil changed. I once did three vehicles back to back that had over a year and 12k on there valv. bulk 5w30.
