..it really sucks. I was referred to as white trash today, based on what I drive.

Family went to the park for some good fun. Parked between a town and country, and a santa fe. As the couple got out of their santa fe, both the wife and their kids smacked their stuff against our car. Then the wife goes" Oh" , and the husband goes " Don't even worry about it, it's a white trash car anyways..." He must have noticed my glare, beacuse he finished with "Just look at the family, see what I mean?" Then laughed about it. For the sake of my kid, I just blew it off...

While I realize a cavalier isn't exactly high class, I would never put someone down driving one. Old or not, my cars are always shiney and clean (well, as much as you can with a kid), and look pretty good for their age.Sadly, the dud's santa fe was dirty (really) and messy inside too. I'd be willing to bet the engine was cleaner too. Heck, her car drives great for it's age-why get rid of it?

*sigh*

Thanks for listening...

I'd have given it to him. I've always been pretty mild mannered. But my wife is not and doesn't take any . I'm learning from her that sometimes you have to put people in their place. I think you missed an opportunity to stick up for you and your family. Two years ago I'd have done just what you did, though.

The passive agressive in me might have opened my door with a bit of energy while parked next to his car. If he complained, I would have responded with, sorry, I was just following your more enlightened example. Since you claimed we were inferior, following in your example of superior behavior appeared to be in order.

Not only did I do what you did, but I even did it with more enthusiasm. I hope you liked my eagerness to follow in your example.

But that would be very passive aggressive.

The nerve of some people.

Im not ripping on Hyundai's but they a pretty budget car. I could almost see it happening if they stepped out of the Rolls Phantom. Still wouldnt make it right though.

Well I guess minorities aren't the only ones dealing with this [censored] because apparently there is stereotyping amongst whites.
If the genie told me to make a wish, having this go away would be 1 of'em.

I do not judge people by what they drive. I drive used cars because they are more affordable and usually just as reliable. I could easily go buy 2 new vehicles, but I prefer to save my money (and put some in the bank) by not continually having to make payments. Come on now, I am currently driving a Chevy Metro (3-cyl.) - not exactly out to impress anyone but it's reliable and gets 40/50 city/highway mpg.

Read the 'Old high-mileage cars' topic in the 'General Automotive' section recently started here on BITOG - it's becoming a pretty common practice.

I occasionally get comments made to me when i'm riding one of my scooters - but I simply laugh back when I see how much it costs them at the pump vs. my 100-mpg.

In your case Dave, I probably would've done the same thing. Like the old saying goes - it takes a bigger man to walk away. Besides, there are already too many hot-heads and wanna-be bad boys in the world already - why lower yourself to that standard.

I have the similar situation. My work car is a 1981 VW rabbit diesel that I run on WVO and drive 70 miles round trip and is yellow to boot and has been through [censored] and back and my wife has a very nice Audi A4 as our family car. I get looks all the time and people laugh, but I laugh on the inside. It doesn't bother me.

Dude, that's extremely disrespectful. Man, I wish I would've smacked him/her for you. Were they a minority? I'm tired of minorities disrespecting Caucasian people.

Thanks for ripping on Hyundai's, Mr. Porsche Driver....

Dave, don't lose sleep over it. There are all kinds of people out there and you came across some who lack manners and are inconsiderate. In situations like this my philosophy is to simply ignore it - feeling bad about what complete strangers say is not going to add any value to your life. I instead focus on the positive things - makes the day-to-day life a lot more tolerable.

That would have been a real challenge to keep quiet on. As you can see, low life's come in all economic states. When I hear some "I'm me and you're not" social moron who thinks that his wallet sets his level of class ...it really brings out the worst in me. Manners and civility are signs of class. Anything less is just a low life in finer clothing. A predisposition toward superiority shows how under socialized they are. I would wanted to say to his wife or son (I suspect there was one "heir apparent" observing how in command Dad was) "How did you teach your children such good manners?"

That all said you managed to be someone of class while dealing with a low life.

I salute your civility and gentility

It happened to a friend of mine; it involved an uppity late-model Audi driver who slammed a grocery cart into my friend's older Ford Tempo. "It's just a piece of [censored]" the man was overheard to say when scolded by his wife. The difference is (and I DON'T recommend doing this) my friend saw the entire scene from a few rows away and after seeing the man and his wife go back into another store, used his Tempo as a ram to press another cart against the Audi's passenger-side door with such force that it probably punctured the sheet metal.

Oh, I wanted to-trust me. But I wanted to set a good example for my 2 year old.

You're doing a correct thing by ignoring it. There were several correct choices, you chose one.

I'd likely have said, "At least it's paid for, does the bank own yours?" then given an irritating smile.

Wow, just wow. That's insane. Props for keeping your cool, I don't think I could have done the same. That Santa Fe probably would have been dragged across the parking lot.

I wonder why they were on such a high horse? Nothing wrong with a Hyundai, but it doesn't exactly give you snob status.

You can call us whites. I'm not going to be offended or call you racist.

I really believe that there is something mentally wrong with someone who can say something like that right to your (and your families)face. It's almost as if they have some type of a deficiency in their life or in their upbringing and the only way they can feel good about themselves is to try and convince themselves they are better than others.

What did your children think about the incident?

PS- Cavi's are great cars and I have had quite few of them.
