When did TurtleWax buy MMO?

I bought 2 quarts today at Menard's and they both say they'e made by Marvel Oil Company and the website links on the bottle no longer work (www.marveloilcompany.com). The bottles don't look old at all but maybe the looks could be deceiving... anyone have any insight on this? I tried googling it but I couldn't find any information. Also, the bottle says: "09271 05221FP"

Edit: Upon further searching I found out it was acquired by TurtleWax in 1999. Yikes, is this stuff possibly that old? It really doesn't look old at all...

Edit 2: I read the inside label of the back of the bottle (it flips out) and it says "The diesel fuel additive does not comply with the federal ultra-low sulfur content requirements for use in model year 2007 and newer diesel motor vehicles, or model year 2011 and newer diesel nonroad equipment engines" so that leads me to believe this bottle is almost new... but why the heck would they be using the old link/brand? I'm totally confused...

I doubt the product is that old. turtle wax likely kept the original packaging, branding, and website in place for years - and then eventually dropped the original website without spending the money to change the packaging.

Turtle Wax did not buy Marvel for the quality of the product, they bought it for the power of the name. They have kept things the way they were to help market the brand. I would be willing to bet 80% of the folks using MMO do not know it is owned by Turtle Wax.

The MMO bottle is changing too. As long as I can remember the 1-quart bottles were packaged in opaque plastic bottles, but yesterday I noticed the 1-quart bottles packaged in transparent plastic bottles.

The ones I bought are dark red, barely see through unless you hold it up to the light. It's also multilingual: "Vea Atras Para Espanol!" lol. I still have no idea if it's old or not, and why they have 2011 vehicles listed on the label when they aren't being made yet.

Found some more information, I believe this bottle is from 2006 or newer:

A new EPA regulation for diesel fuel additives went into effect on June 1, 2006 while the vast majority of the consumer diesel fuel additive industry was not notified or made aware of this requirement before May 1, 2006. Therefore, products remaining on store shelves or in retail inventory prior to June 1, 2006 may not be appropriately labeled.



This regulation requires that all diesel fuel additives SOLD after June 1, 2006 be labeled with one of two statements on the container depending on the sulfur content of the product:



1) For those additives sold in containers for use by the ultimate consumer with a sulfur content not exceeding 15 ppm, the following statement applies:

“This diesel fuel additive complies with the federal low sulfur content requirements for use in diesel motor vehicles and nonroad engines.”



2) For those additives sold in containers for use by the ultimate consumer, with a sulfur content in excess of 15 ppm, the following statement applies:

“This diesel fuel additive does not comply with federal ultra-low sulfur content requirements for use in model year 2007 and newer diesel motor vehicles or model year 2011 and newer diesel nonroad equipment engines.”


MMO falls into the latter, and since this memo was sent in 2006, it has to be from 2006 or newer.

I went to Meijer tonight and they had the same bottles that I bought at Menards, with the outdated website info on the bottle. I guess TurtleWax is just too cheap to update their labels?

I do not use MMO but I have known it is owned by Turtle wax so not sure where that leaves me. lol

Marvel Mystery Oil actually came out in the late 1920s. Some claim the formula has been changed from time to time. There was a time that it came in a red can. I can't even exactly remember the first time I tried the stuff. It was in some old used car-the kind of car I was driving when I was young and did not have much in the way of money.

MMO has probably been around longer than any other automotive supplement that I can think of.
