What’s your thoughts on the new Cummins oil filter

With the new 6th Gen Cummins 6.7 it went from a spin on pain in the neck to change filter to a cartridge filter. Fleetguard LF16343. Theymake it for mopar. I like it because I can see if there’s any metal flakes in the pleats when changing the oil. I think it’s a better design.

Have you ever changed one of those filters? Nearly impossible to get to and you spill oil everywhere as you have to pull it out horozontle. They make a cap to put on it but that's more troublesome than cleaning up the mess.

Yes. I did the oil changes on every Ram 2500-3500 we used at the car lot.

Break it loose through the passenger-side wheel well. After that, get up in the engine bay and remove the intake tube, then reach down, unscrew it, and pull it out without spilling a drop.

If you ever have to do one, take the intake tube off and look down, you'll see what I'm talking about.

It takes far less time to loosen the 8mm bolts holding the intake tube on than it does to clean up the mess when doing it the "normal" way.

I step up onto the tow hook, bumper, or whatever's there, and crawl up and lie across the top. (I guess it helps if you're still a bit nimble.)

My 2018 RAM 2500 6.7 was not that big of a deal to change the oil filter. I could do it all through the right wheel well and as soon as the filter was unspun, it rested on the frame rail and just used a aftermarket filter cap and then could pull it out without pretty much no mess.
 
What did you consider a pain in the neck about the spin on filter? :unsure:
You have to reach over the passenger front tire to get it off let it slide down don’t spill any oil put a plug on the filter one handed blindly tilt the filter about 90 degrees to get it out. Prefill the new filter do the process in reverse order spin the filter on by feel only without spilling oil. Yeah that pain in the neck easy stuff.

You don't have to do that.

I don't want to make an unnecessary mess; this is why I remove /install the filter from the top. The time spent removing the intake tube was less than the time spent cleaning up the spilled oil.

I agree the new design makes an oil filter change easier, but I just never thought the old spin-on was a pain to deal with.

Even doing it your way is still a pain in the neck. But what about the filter?
 
A pickup truck is one thing - but this engine will be used in class 7 trucks, transit buses(coupled to an Allison or BAE Systems hybrid drive system or non-hybrid in smaller buses), school buses and off-road applications. This is going to be interesting, like the Navistar cartridges on the PSD 6.0/4.
 
Here’s the filter specs. I am sure there’s plenty of people here that have a very good educated opinion backed up with facts to help us understand it.

The 2025 B6.7 will be RAM only once Cummins release their EPA 2027 engines.

The B6.7 Octane (yes its a gas engine) and B7.2 will be the new engines for the Class 6-7 truck market and they still have canister oil filters.
