Some (not all) of this may be obsolete as it is 40 years old but here are all the mufflers I have used (all American V8 muscle car applications) and some notes:
1) Generic chain exhaust shop "turbo" mufflers - cheap, came with a decent lifetime warranty back in the day, I did not enjoy the interior drone but it was tolerable, I was 16 years old and dirt poor so it was the best option then. The glass packing does not last and when the matting finally is ineffective the mufflers sound terrible.
2) NOS Hemi street mufflers - these were available for a period in my youth / 20's and are now reproduced. Great tone and reasonably affordable when you could still get NOS ones (1980's). Seemed weird to have a Mopar part on my GM muscle cars but it was a decent solution.
3) Walker Dynomax - good value for the dollar, moderate interior drone, livable for sure. Ok life expectancy. By the time I was using this muffler higher octane ethanol blended fuels were becoming popular so that reduced the life span significantly (so much water byproduct from these fuels) on packed mufflers.
4) Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Flow - this is my favorite aftermarket muffler, I was skeptical at first because most of the Flowmasters in my crowd were the nasty loud / bad drone interior ones, but these 50 DF's are excellent. They sound great and little to no interior drone. Any future V8 muscle cars I have that I decide to put aftermarket exhaust on would get this one. No glass packing to get matted up either.
5) Hooker Aerochamber - I have not used this personally however a close friend who we do the car thing together on has them and they sound great, no drone. Must be ten years old on his car now, no issues.
6) Powersticks - classic sound, a bit too loud but if you are in front of it then it is not so bad. I am not sure what I would put these on now as an old guy, too much attention but I like that classic chambered sound for sure, especially with big duration cams. Everyone notices you at the drive in.
